On a spy novel discussion group I frequent I posted my top ten favourite spy thrillers recently: I would be interested in reading other top fives/tens should one feel able. There may be some novels of which I am unaware and a discussion might be prompted about the authors listed. :)

1) Eric Ambler

I must have made some mistake. It seems to have been sorted now. Do post here if you have your own list or thoughts. :)

You've done a great job of selling Eric Ambler to me. I feel duty bound to try him out.

No room for Len Deighton?

I don't know if I can come up with ten. Despite all the reading I do, I really don't read that many spy novels, except for Fleming. I've read plenty that are in the "spy novel" vein, but when you boil it down, most aren't tecnically about spies. But for the sake of the list, I'll include them.

1. The Spy Who Came In From The Cold - John Le Carr

I don't think i can come up with 10 because i mostly read horror or non-fiction books but i will list my favorite spy-detective book i have read that is probably on my overall favorite booklist.

The Man With the Golden Gun

I thought this was one of flemings best and it could have possibly been the best bond novel had fleming lived to re-edit it.

I honestly haven't read enough diverse books to really make a good list. I'm afraid it would be, for now, the usual suspects - mainly Fleming. I will say From Russia with Love is one of my all-time favorites. Not just of spy fiction, but for all genres.

Where's spynovelfan on this one?

I would urge you to track down an Ambler if possible Scrambled Eggs. As mentioned, he is my favourite author and had an unmistakeable influence on the genre: he introduced a degree of realism not previously found and was effectively the father of the modern spy novel. The recurring theme of his works
