The Man With The Red Tattoo

If you sat back and started to analyse the Fleming titles, even they would begin to sound horrendous. It is only because they have for so long been a part of the psyche that they are deemed art.
Imagine if Goldfinger came out now - what fun we could have had dissecting that one. And Moonraker isn't much better - Spacehoe anyone

Hummm... I don't know, I kind of like the way this looks. (Sure beats Beyond the Ice)Jacques Nexus (25 Oct, 2001 04:50 p.m.):
It may suit a novel but perhaps NOT for a film ?. Can you imagime this:

Ohhhh...see, now that's the kind of thing I like.Jacques Nexus (25 Oct, 2001 04:50 p.m.):
2. It may be symbolic, referring to a horrendous scar on the villain's body ?

I just thought of something.
Count Lippe (sp?) was 'the man with the red tattoo' in Thunderball, so maybe Benson is covering the tong/triad/yakuza angle.

Has anyone else noticed that CB.N is the ONLY Bond website to break this news? Maybe they're all waiting for an official announcement from Eon.

How likely is it for the book to really be named this however? Glidrose has dropped I think all of Benson's suggested titles for the past books. I would not be surprised to see it end up as a chapter title.

I don't believe Benson has ever let a title slip before Glidrose approved it. Though, maybe Dave is just that good a journalist to get the title before Glidrose.

I think it's safe to assume this is the official title. RB would not let the title out if it wasn't approved by Glidrose. However, don't forget that when HTTK first showed up on Amazon it was under the title A BETTER WAY TO DIE.RossMan (26 Oct, 2001 11:07 p.m.):

Very good work zencat !. I still don't like the title YET, but your cover art is helping to bring me around a bit. The problem for me is that VERBALLY it sounds bland & lame. Even a GOLDEN GUN sounds more dangerous than...God Almighty !...a RED TATTOO ?. Notice how Fleming described the GUN as GOLDEN & Glidrose chose another colour to describe the TATTOO ?. This similarity makes the new title even more unoriginal. I have a controversial theory why Glidrose trot out these "MAN" tiltles from time to time...I'll post it when I'm brave enough to do it. Visually, I'll wait till the official cover art is released till I pass final judgement.zencat (26 Oct, 2001 06:41 p.m.):
Thanks all!

I don't know what's wrong with me right now, but even BEYOND THE ICE is starting to sound better to me (My God !...did I really say that ?). Anyhow...what the hell happened to that NDOD movie title, "TSUNAMI RISING" ?.zencat (25 Oct, 2001 08:54 p.m.):

Hey that's a great idea. With the Russian angle (the Kuril Islands), perhaps Gorbachev is IN the novel ?. Any chance THE MAN WITH THE RED TATTOO is Gorby and not Yoshida ?.blofelds_cat (26 Oct, 2001 02:30 a.m.):

If that were the case then the title would be rather misleading wouldn't it? A tattoo and a birthmark are totally different things.A birthmark is genetic and a tattoo is self inflicted body art/mutilation.Mind you its a poor title anyway. There is nothing Flemingesque about it.I'd guess this is one of Glidrose's.

I don't think being "Flemingesque" should a requirement. The title should fit the book, that's all. I'm sure once the book is released RB will reveal the origins of the title and what other titles may have been considered...if any.sainttemplar (31 Oct, 2001 02:52 p.m.):

Dave (30 Oct, 2001 01:51 p.m.):
The Man With The Red Tattoo will be the title for Raymond Benson's next book.
I'm not doubting you Dave, its just where did you hear this from? Raymond himself? Its just that no other sites have reported this, not even www.ianfleming.org

I wonder if this was RB original title? Perhaps he came up with a much better title...which seems more likely.
This was one of Raymond's titles, but it wasn't his first choice. I'm a very, very big fan of the working title Raymond had, but unfortunately I can't disclose what it was. I will let you know when I'm allowes to tell you what it was.
