I dont want to take enything away from David Arnold and say its not eny good but the fact is that I havent been impressed at all with the latest scores for the films. What happened to great title songs like Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Spy Who loved me and so on. Ofthen these songs put a theme over the hole film so you hear them all the way trough the film in different versions to suit the different scenes.

Remember George Martins soundtrack Live and let die, Marvin Hamlischs The spy who loved me, Bill Contis For Your Eyes Only. All these and more including all of John Barrys you can listen to different scores in the Film Soundtrack and still know which film its from.

David Arnolds title songs hasnt been so good, the best must be Tomorrow Never Dies (which also has a great endtitle song), and the rest of the soundtracks are awful to listen to couse they are just a drumm there and a drum there when bond rices an eyebrow.

I know that composing all these songs is allot of hard work and David has done a good job but I just would like to have someting more from the soundtracks.

You Know My Name can be heard in many tracks of the Casino Royale soundtrack.

This is probably my only complaint about CR is I don't care for the main song. I grew up on the Connery Bond movies, so the songs that stick in my head are Diamonds Are Forever, Goldfinger, From Russia with Love, Thunderball, etc...
Someone mentions Bond and I start to hear Shirley Bassey or Tom Jones.

But this is just my opinion, to each there own.

Check out this topic in the music discussion section. The interview gives alot of great insight into the way Arnold works.

I thought the CR soundtack was the best yet as it didn't over use the Bond theme (Simply because he is not "James Bond" just yet) and the music went really well with the emotional scenes.

I think hes done a great job.look forward to the next one.hopefully not as much music to let the film breath a bit like CR does.

Although the theme song isn't as memorable as some, I loved the fact that it (instead of the Bond theme) was used throughout the film as a unifying thread, like Barry used to do.

I don't care for Arnold's techno stuff, but when he's "channeling" Barry (like CR and TND) he is the best composer since Mr. Barry (although Martin was very good, too).

As Arnold admits he's a fan and will write the scores as long as they ask him to, I hope he does.

And if he contines to have good 007 films to score, I think he'll do fine. Even Barry's stuff got a bit soulless and formula in his later 007 scores, when the films got sillier and more formula. You could tell he didn't really care anymore and was writing them in his sleep.

And I know this will irk some, I'm more worried about Kleinman. I loved his first couple title sequences for GE and TND, but the radical new title srequence looked more like an Anime movie than a Bond film.

If the tracklistings on the CD singles on amazon are anything to go by, it isn't looking very promising.

He used the JB theme more in CR than in the other movies. That suprised me. He makes effective film music, but not memorable music. I loved the faithful version of John Barry's JB theme at the end though.

So the version on next month's single won't be the same as the one playing over the film's opening credits? Is it the first version that was leaked on the internet - the rawer-sounding one, slightly faster and with shoutier vocals and less orchestra? Hope so, 'cause I prefer the "original" version.

As for Arnold, I've never been a fan.... until now. His CR work is a definite cut above his earlier Bond stuff, and I'd welcome another soundtrack from him, which is something I never thought I'd write.

For my eardrums he makes pretty decent action music and in CR specifically I really enjoyed what he did with YKMN throughout the movie. What I really don't like is his melancholic themes, [insert random bond girl's name]-theme, romantic themes etc. They are utterly devoid of subtlety and really just aren't that good. There were too many times during CR that I felt like I was listening to music from TWINE.

So, action=good, use of YKMN = good, emotional/melancholic/romantic themes = please, please stop!

Actually, Skudor, it was the romantic stuff that really made me dig the CASINO ROYALE score. By far Arnold's best "romantic" stuff to date as far as the Bond franchise is concerned. As far as the action music of CASINO ROYALE, I didn't find it that exciting. Sure, "African Rundown" is fun, but the rest of it isn't all that great.

Couldn't agree more. The "City of Lovers" theme that plays as their boat sails into Venice is just beautiful, and feels like classic Bond to me. It was those scenes, and the romantic scenes while Bond is recuperating, that made me go from really liking the film, to loving it; and the music played no small part in that.

Some of the action cues, particularly the one where Bond runs through Venice, seem a bit bombastic and overcooked to me.

Talking of "African Rundown", would you agree that it seems to be the OHMSS-inspired de facto new James Bond Theme that Arnold was going on about in an interview a while back? (Sorry, forget the source so can't cite it.)
