Man.... people in the theater were just stunned at the sudden shift in tone... the joking around??! what??

Honestly, this felt like an Austin Powers bit... this was ridiculous... of all the things to change from the book... it totally made it seem like he wasn't in horrible horrible agaonizing pain... then compounded by the fact that he recovers quite quickly afterwords (a bit of text saying "several weeks later" might have been good)

Loved the movie... just that stood out as something completely odd....

Defiant to the end, that's how James Bond is. In his mind he was going to die, no ifs, ands or buts, this was it, this was the end. The fact that he got that sudden reprieve at the end was sheer luck.

The torture dialogue is one of the best parts in the film. Bond made jokes to keep his mind off the pain. It's brilliant!

Joking around probably helped him to "ignore" the pain (if such a thing is possible when one hits you square in the nadgers).

(Righty beat me to it, so i'll just complement it)

Quite a hysterical scene.

absolutely.... I get why he did it... but I just don't think a scene like that should have been played for jokes... of course, maybe that's how the film got the rating it did from the censors...

to me, the scene in the book is SO much more powerful... I was expecting something powerful and instead got a laugh

Bond's transition from scream to laughter is powerful stuff, in my opinion.

Yeah, definitely. Terrifying. And his lines are absolutely in keeping with Bond's attitude from the near-emasculation scene in Fleming's GOLDFINGER:

"Bond decided it was time to stop talking. It was time to start winding up the mainspring of will-power that must not run down again until he was dead. Bond said politely, 'Then you can go and
---- yourself.'"

I see his dialogue in that scene much in the same vein. He's pissing Le Chiffre off as well as trying to keep his sense of will and determination in the midst of the overwhelming agony. I thought it was a moment of real black humor and I, for one, didn't find his dialogue as much humorous as it was very dark and bitter in the context.

I recally you had problems with this dialogue upon reading the script. Now that you've seen it in the context of the movie, why does it work better for you? Is it the performances that make it that much better?

Well first off, the worst line in that sequence ("I always knew you were a sore loser") is gone. Secondly, the performances sell it. 100%. It's a chilling scene, and acted beautifully.

Best scene of the movie. The audience was 100% behind Bond.

It was a little too jokey for me. Funny, yes, but I would have liked to have seen a little more torture. :) For instance, I think the scene might have worked even better if Le Chiffre was so pissed off and desperate at Bond's attitude/refusal to cooperate that he violently lashed out with the rope two or three more times in quick successsion and leaving Bond speechless except for screaming in agony and then have Mr. White enter the picture. A few more lashings would also further drive the point home that Bond is severely injured from the event which, while extremely painful, I don't fully believe he is from the few strikes he gets in the film.

Amazed by this scene. It didn't read too well in the script in my opinion, but I was blown away on screen. Best scene in the movie in my opinion; amazingly acted.

I'd like to know who wrote the line:

"Now everyone will know you died scratching my balls"

(Or, something like that)

That was a line of genius.

How long does the scene of torture go for? Long enough before Mr White enters?

I thought it was Daniel Craig's defining moment as James Bond and I completely agree with Harmsway statements. Still everytime Bond's "bits" got smack by that knotted rope, I jump in my seat, and you can still see the look of sheer pain in Bond's face and eyes.

I took the joking as Bond's attempt to get Le Chiffre pissed enough to hurry up the torture.. I thought the close up of Craig's eyes and the panic in them kept it from being too jokey.. he's clearly putting on a show for Le Chiffre, but his eyes give away the terror and his terror for the girl..

I did think that scene should have been longer though.. in the book, Fleming makes it a point to have Bond weave in and out of consciousness and show the torture over many hours.. I thought the scene in the movie was much too abrupt (and Le Chiffre's death was so sudden that it almost didn't matter)..

I missed SMERSH though.. wtf, no scar on the hand?????

I thought it was a great scene, though I know some people in my audience didn't like it. Sitting next to me was a mother, father and a boy who must have been about 8.
Since I had seen it last Monday already, when they sat down I wondered if they knew what was coming and sure enough when the torture scene came on the screen the three got up and left in disgust.

Yeah, before the movie there was a lady walking down the aisle that was appalled that children were watching a Bond movie.

"What are 7 year olds doing at a Bond movie!?" OMG!
