Torture sequence....

Honestly, this felt like an Austin Powers bit... this was ridiculous... of all the things to change from the book... it totally made it seem like he wasn't in horrible horrible agaonizing pain... then compounded by the fact that he recovers quite quickly afterwords (a bit of text saying "several weeks later" might have been good)
Loved the movie... just that stood out as something completely odd....

to me, the scene in the book is SO much more powerful... I was expecting something powerful and instead got a laugh

Yeah, definitely. Terrifying. And his lines are absolutely in keeping with Bond's attitude from the near-emasculation scene in Fleming's GOLDFINGER:Bond's transition from scream to laughter is powerful stuff, in my opinion.
"Bond decided it was time to stop talking. It was time to start winding up the mainspring of will-power that must not run down again until he was dead. Bond said politely, 'Then you can go and
---- yourself.'"
I see his dialogue in that scene much in the same vein. He's pissing Le Chiffre off as well as trying to keep his sense of will and determination in the midst of the overwhelming agony. I thought it was a moment of real black humor and I, for one, didn't find his dialogue as much humorous as it was very dark and bitter in the context.

I recally you had problems with this dialogue upon reading the script. Now that you've seen it in the context of the movie, why does it work better for you? Is it the performances that make it that much better?

Well first off, the worst line in that sequence ("I always knew you were a sore loser") is gone. Secondly, the performances sell it. 100%. It's a chilling scene, and acted beautifully.I recally you had problems with this dialogue upon reading the script. Definitely. Craig did a fantastic job with the scene.

The torture dialogue is one of the best parts in the film. Bond made jokes to keep his mind off the pain. It's brilliant!
My sentiments exactly. Daniel's acting in that scene was stunning!

"Now everyone will know you died scratching my balls"
(Or, something like that)
That was a line of genius.

I did think that scene should have been longer though.. in the book, Fleming makes it a point to have Bond weave in and out of consciousness and show the torture over many hours.. I thought the scene in the movie was much too abrupt (and Le Chiffre's death was so sudden that it almost didn't matter)..
I missed SMERSH though.. wtf, no scar on the hand?????

Since I had seen it last Monday already, when they sat down I wondered if they knew what was coming and sure enough when the torture scene came on the screen the three got up and left in disgust.
