So, now that we have CR (and, admittedly, I can't see it until tonight or tomorrow night, so I'm going strictly off spoilers here), the pressure is obviously on for Bond 22 to deliver as a solid sequel.

However, now that we have new aspects of Bond's character, namely that he's not as seasoned and is fallible, the hard task for the character will be to continue the dynamic that was begun here, WITHOUT adding more jokes and beginning to turn Bond back into the cartoon. Also, it is important to avoid the other mistake, which is an obligatory major mission-screwup to show Bond isn't infallible. Either of those paths are easy to drift into, and both work to thin out James Bond as a character. Like Frodo's mission to destroy the ring, the putative well-written scripting of James Bond stands upon the edge of a knife.

Onto plotting...it will be important to avoid copying the plot structure of this film too closely, as well as trying to make all stunts bigger, faster, and "better." In regards to Vesper's cameo, it will be a major task to give good characterization to the new girl so that Vesper doesn't completely overshadow her (any more than she already will). It will also be another major task to go one way or another with characters such as Felix (either he's gonna be Bond's friend :P or he's gonna bow out :P , but it has to go one way or another) and Mathis (many things to be cleared up here :)). All this in addition to developing the primary villain(s) as believable people.

Basically, as you can see, it is important to avoid placing CR on too high a pedestal when considering how to (God help us) "formulate" Bond 22. It cannot be another Casino Royale (though it will hopefully surpass its quality!).

Please share your opinions, hopes, fears, etc. on this subject...

I would love to be able to quote an actual article. but Christopher Nolan recently spoke about the Batman Begins sequel. He mentioned since the original film was such a success, he's got freedom to take the sequel into places the original film never dared go (trying to stay as audience friendly as possible, it seems).

I imagine the producers will go down a similar path with Bond22, as CR (so far) seems to be working for the public. Daniel Craig himself said there is a lot more to explore Bond as a character before he becomes completely shut off and the agent we all know from the earlier films.

With Craig getting more input than any of the other actors (he's actually going to sit down in the early script meetings), I have no reason to believe that Bond 22 wont be another hit.

Interesting. But didn't Brosnan do the same thing? For instance, they [EON] said that it was Brosnan's idea to have Bond captured and tortured in DAD.

As for Bond 22, I think it all depends on the director and the boxoffice. With the same director (Campbell) the film will probably be more "daring". With a new director it could be more "safe".

Anyway, I hope Daniel Craig will get at least one opportunity to do a "formula-Bond", since it is a dam good formula when the timing is right. If CR is FRWL... then lets bring on the jet-packs now :)

If Craig lasts at least four films in the role, I can see his fourth and final film being a more traditional James Bond film. Following the formula, yet still allowing for Craig's characterization of Bond to come forward.

I respectfully disagree. The lack of formula will keep folks interested. (Then again, perhaps that's what Webern said...)
