I've just come in from seeing Casino Royale...
Wow...what can I say, very different from the Brosnan-era Bond and maybe about time for such a change. I found the film gritty, violent (in parts) but with a healthy dash of Connery-style one-liners & swagger. I loved it...
The film has plenty of action, the first half fires along at a breathless pace with Daniel Craig looking suitably "Action Man" but with a cool, sarcastic edge.
The second half with the casino game slows things down but offers the chance for a bit of drama and character investigation.
The movie is beautifully shot, I was v.impressed with the opening graphics which were very cleverly done and Chris Cornell's maligned opening track fits surprisingly well when heard in context.
Mads Mikkelsen is excellent with his understated performance as Le Chiffre, dispensing with the recent crop of OTT villains.
I know some people will claim this is not a Bond film and it is different from what has recently gone before but the Roger Moore films I saw as a kid were very different from the Connery or Dalton films and this is merely a continuation of what is a natural progression - Bond is not something preserved in aspic, the films have always moved with the times.
Glamour, girls, beautiful locations, an Aston Martin, plenty of action and a tough and charismatic leading man - this certainly is a Bond film and a damn good one.
Well done Daniel Craig...
