Have just received the first four (LALD, MR, TB, OHMSS) from my father, who has bought the whole set for me in Sydney and is sending them up 3-4 at a time via my company

Good Deal on the Books!
Did you try a hair dryer, I usually use it to peel labels off of my books? I Just let the hair dryer (on Hi) blow on the label and it melts the glue.

Man, I hate stickers! Especially library ones that go over blurbs. It's like the librarians/clerks say, Hm, I think I'll ruin the cover of every book today. When they do it with any book, it's bad. When it's done with Bond books, it's a sacreligious.

What is the design on On Her Majesty’s Secret Service' cover? I scrutinised it at the Penguin site, but couldn't make out anything.

When I come across stickers, on books and video covers, I'll usually just take a small pocket knife and just use it to get under it and peel it off. I've found this works better than a fingernail, and works about eight out of ten times. I hate those annoying stickers.

Not too sure myself, General.

I scanned the whole cover (complete with that damned sticker!) to get the big picture, so to speak.

It looks like ice.

Although, I couldn't find any phallic symbols to adhere to zencat's revelation on graphic artists' propencity when using ice.

I really wish there could be a US release with similar design. With the exception of the Richard Chopping covers of the classic first editions, I really like simple and well designed covers like the ones I've seen from this set.

Received six more by courier today, and still no Casino Royale yet.

Luck has spit in my face, and will have to wait for the next (and last) lot to arrive before I can actually start reading them.

Penguin has messed up big time with the covers as far as I'm concerned.

Looking at the spines of the 10 I already have, the book title (in small print) runs above the author's name (in big print), but because O&YLD is only 130 odd pages, and therefore thin, it's spine has the title and author's name on one line. So when you line up the books on a shelf you can see the spine print all nicely lining up except O&TLD at the end, on which the print is significantly higher up. Sticks out like a sore thumb.

What's also annoying is that all the titles are coloured silver except Goldfinger and TMWTGG, which are, you guessed it, in gold lettering. I know that the other 4 yet to come are also silver, so what's the point of having 2 books out of a set of 14 being in a different colour.

I know this doesn't change what's between the covers, but still.

Geez!

This thread has been very helpful. I'm feeling better about my decision to pass on this release. They just don't grab me. Tell me, has anyone bought the hardcover versions? (I'm assuming what we're talking about the paperbacks here). I'm still thinking about getting the CR hardcover just to have one.

Let's hope they do a better job with the U.S. books. FYI: BN.com shows an Aug 15 release date for these...but still no cover pic.

Ah, the wait is ending soon! I really hope that these covers are not as BC says they are :)

Well now that you point out the spines the covers don't seem that appealing. I'm incredibly picky about things lining up and looking uniform in chronological order, which is why I loathe the design of the Bond DVD set (which looks like a rainbow when lined up).

I was contemplating getting the hardcovers Zencat, they are pretty decent quality, but when I realised it would cost more than my entire Bond DVD collection I passed up straight away. Im sticking with my golden oldies.

Yes, I am refering to the paperbacks. For some reason, I've never being partial to hardbacks.

To give you an idea of what I mean about the spines of the books when they are lined up..

If the lettering on the other books were moved up in line with O&TLD and the gold lettering was changed to silver, they would look much better.

When I get the other 4, I'll post another pic.

I was finally able to get a close up look at these books in Canada and one thing I found that was pretty nifty is how at the end of the book they have a "James Bond Will Return in..." blurb. Strange though that not all the books have this?

Yep, I noticed that too. It's as if it was an afterthought once printing had started on some of the books.

I have also started buying these ones, and so far I'm up to FRWL. I'm getting them in chronological order, since I'm fussy with those types of things. I saw the first three US reprints in Chapters last weekend, and at first I was kinda peed that I didn't buy those ones, but then my friend pointed out that they were nearly double the price. The new ones are very attractive, but I'll stick with my current ones. And one thing that annoys me with the Penguin reprints is that the "James Bond" gray lettering on the spines is almost invisble on CR. Oh well.

They look very nice all lined up. The gold is different, but considering the cover designs are so versatile, I don't really notice it.

I've got books from both sets, and they are both cool, but I've decided to complete the US set, they're the trade paperback size and they're really retro.....these above look good lined up, except for the O&TLD one...

I own all the U.K. issues and love the art - aside from Octopussy / The Living Daylights title, as Blofeld's Cat mentioned.

The gold print doesn't bother me because it fits in with the rest of the set. The colour of title text matches the colour of the inside covers. And the titles on the other covers aren't all the same colour - - most of them are varied shades of silver but a handful are tints of other colours: The Spy Who Loved Me's is lilac in colour.

I've almost finished Live and Let Die. Loving it! :)

Be Aware! This works perfectly with CDs, but I wouldn't try it on books. Depends on how the covers are finished: if they are laminated (like most schoolbooks are), nothing should happen (but then the stickers would go off easily). If the are finished with a clear varnish (standard procedure), you should be very careful, because you don't know what kind of varnish they used. Could ruin the book, especially when you get too close to the edge. And it depends on what kind of stickers they used. Ususally, it's those paper-stickers, and they can behave very nasty. And normally, there always stay some shades when using alcohol.
Best way is the old hairdryer method. Be patient, don't let it get too hot. Don't use fingernails, knives or something like that too peel off the edges. This always leaves some damage. Take a piece of Scotch tape, put it on the sticker, right over the edge and peel slowly.
(Oh, and if the covers aren't finished at all: don't even dare trying to remove 'em)
