Currently I'm busy editing my new short film 'Flight' starring Dutch star Antonie Kamerling ('The Little Small Death', 'Mindhunters' & 'The Exorcist: The Beginning') and even my birthday on the 13th of November could not keep me out of the editing suite. Until a friend of mine asked me if I'd be interested in seeing 'Casino Royale' two weeks before the official Dutch premiere. You probably guessed my reaction. :)

Here's my view on 'Casino Royale':

Bond Bleeds
'Casino Royale' reviewed by Niels Bourgonje

Bond is back. But don't be fooled by critics who claim that his absence lasted for 4 years, because it was actually closer to 40. Not since 'From Russia With Love' has Bond been so effective and convincing. Timothy Dalton, although a welcome departure from Moore's antics, always seemed too stiff to play Bond. Daniel Craig on the other hand commands the screen with his presence and his physicality. He succeeds in making Bond not a superhero, but a genuine human being. Craig's Bond bleeds and suffers. His cold blue eyes show emotion and depth. For the first time since 'From Russia With Love' do you feel for Bond instead of just looking at him.

Martin Campbell's direction is solid, however still too pedestrian for 'Casino Royale' to become a bonavide action classic. The film looks great and the action is terrific, but you can't help thinking what a director like Paul Greengrass or Alfonso Cuar

Interesting...

Not just that you'll be able to see the film on the 13th (happy birthday), but also: your short film! As someone only just stepping into the Dutch world of filmmaking (1st-year at the Film Academy in Amsterdam), I look forward to seeing your project. :P Good luck! :)

Thanks, for more info go to vluchtdefilm.nl. We're currently editing the 15 minute short and it'll probably premiere in January 2007. I'm still thinking about trying to get into the Dutch Film Academy, but I'm afraid I'm getting a little too old. We'll see. Hope you'll enjoy Casino Royale as much as me.

No one's too old for the Academy.

And thank you, I did. :)
