I don't understand the chapter where we the reader are introduced to Mathis and he goes on about how the Munztes are listening to them, etc. How does a radio pick-up can hear them and I just don't get the whole set up that part at all. I'd appreciate some explanation of the chapter, "L'Ennemi Ecoute", especially over the Muntzes and the blown cover. Thanks for the help!

As I recall, the Muntzes have a bug planted in Bond's room. Mathis makes a big production about the radio and turns it on loud so the bug won't pick up his and Bond's conversation. That's it as far as I know.

And the Muntzes are in the room above Bond, listening in via this bug. I love this scene: "Bitch," said Bond, and then remembering the Muntzes, he said 'bitch' again more loudly and walked out of the room. :)

From what I remember, the microphone (rather than a 'bug' as we now know them), is suspended behind the fireplace, with the wires running up to the Muntze's room above (via the chimney) where they have a wire recorder (pre-tape recorder but I believe the same princple).

This set up is seen in Casino Royale. The Muntses being Le Chiffre and Obbano and the listening device being planted in Le Chiffre inhaler and Bond to listen through an ear peace

I believe the presence of the Muntzes serves the story in two ways. First, it provides us an early glimpse into the world of spies in which our protagonist exists. The Muntzes are watching Bond, Mathis is watching the Muntzes, and so forth. Second, it foreshadows to some extent the betrayal yet to come. Bond expects his cover to be blown, but he is surprised at how quickly it has happened. He'll soon come to find that his mission is compromised more deeply than he ever expected.
