For some reason I have a real thing for unused titles. Most Bond fans know these, but for those of you who don't, here's a list of Raymond Benson's orginal titles choices (also see my Gardner ones):

Zero Minus Ten:
-- No Tears For Hong Kong.

The Facts of Death:
-- The World is Not Enough (!)

High Time To Kill:
-- A Better Way To Die (love this title!)

Doubleshot:
-- Doppelganger
-- Reflections in a Broken Glass

Never Dream of Dying
-- Benson's got his first choice (for once).

Hi Tim,

I think "Tod auf Zypern" is the German "The Facts of Death" and not "High Time to Kill". Am I right?

An excellent list there. I knew No Tears For Hong Kong and Reflections in a Broken Glass but the others I didn't. I wonder if EON had a hand at making sure The Facts Of Death wasn't called The World Is Not Enough?

There's an urban myth that Doctor No was translated into Japanese as " We don't need any doctors"

I think that's a great question for Raymond.

BTW, are any of you going to the Bond Collectors Weekend in Chicago where Benson is going to be the guest speaker? If you don't know what the heck I'm talking about, link here: http://members.tripo...herm/index.html

Yes that is an ace question! Perhaps we should e-mail him and ask him? Make an interesting exclusive for the Literary 007 section :)

Unfortunately, I can't afford to go to the James Bond weekend. I wish I was!!! But I do not have the $$ right now :)

A side note. When HIGH TIME TO KILL first showed up on Amazon.co.uk it was under the title A BETTER WAY TO DIE.

Hi there,

I think, all original english titles sound very good. The german translations are boring:

"Zero Minus Ten" is called "Countdown!" (means the same thing in English and in German)

and "High Time to Kill" is called "Tod auf Zypern" which means "Death on Cyprus"

There aren't any more translations of the Benson Books. So I have to read the English versions....

Regards,
Tim

I have to agree with you Tim, they sound a bit dull :)

What they mean in German probably sounds great! It's just that when stuff is translated, like (sorry for going off the subject - just to prove a fact though):

It's like the Japanese movie titles! They are shocking!

I can't remember the Bond movie ones but Titanic in Japan was called 'Big Ship That Sinks'!!!! Go figure!
