At least these appear to be made of the black plastic standard to the majority of "normal" DVD cases- including the SE's.

Yes, they are made of black pastic.

Only problem I can see is that the "inner tray" that seems to slide out of the box is the shape of one of those plastic magazine holders, obscuring roughly the bottom 3rd of all the discs. Thus, it could look like you're displaying 20 copies of the movie Ultimate Edition.

Yes, they are exactly that shape, but I could still tell which movie was which even with the bottom third obscured. And fans who put them in order on these inner trays/sleeves should not have any problem locating a specific movie right away.

Soo the booklets for the film, Are they just all stacked (unprotected) next to the DVD on the one side of the inner sleeve? I don't know, it's weird that my favorite thing about the SE DVD's were the booklets, and I don't want these booklets to fall out, or get ruined while opening the case, or removing DVD's to watch, etc.

Thanks for the pictures. :)

They actually don't look as bad as some people might have thought. Still, it would have been nice to at least have the films in order.

That's exactly how they are, as shown in the pictures I took of the Ultimate DVDs in the inner sleeve's. I agree with you about the booklets, that was one of my favorite things about the SE DVDs as well.

It looks from the pictures the front and sides of the inner sleeve are high enough. I suppose my concern would be opening up the case and having the booklets, or dvd's itself accidently fall out and the booklets get bent up (especially if it's hard to slide open and I have to tilt the box forward)
Have you had any of the above problems?

Not yet. The booklets fit snugly enough that they are not going to move even if you tilt the outer box forward.

I have the set too, and I agree with DLibrasnow; the slimcases aren't bad at all. There's a lot to complain about regarding this release: the ugly artwork (when they have so much BEAUTIFUL poster artwork to pick from, they go with third-rate photoshop), the baffling order of the movies, they way the booklets are wedged into the box. But the slimcases themselves are one of the better things. Like most people, I'm really glad they're not gatefolds. It IS too bad that they say the titles of the movies on the outer boxes, which are actually pretty attractive. That means that the anal retentives among us (like me) can't just reorder them in their boxes. But since you can't see the spines anyway, that doesn't really matter.

I think slimcases are much classier than bulky, old-school, full-size DVD cases. I think we'll see all releases, not just box sets, move toward slimcases as the medium goes into its final stretch in the next several years. Really, there's so much extra, wasted room in those thick DVD cases! I like having the extra room no the shelf. These new Bonds take up half the space of the old ones. And they look slightly better too. The art is hideous whatever way you look at it, but it manages to look a little bit classier on the slimcases than on the Region 2 ones.

One problem with the packaging for me is that when you slide out the "magazine file" style interior box that houses the DVDs from the outer shell, the cardboard always catches. Over time that will really make the inner box worn out. Do you have this problem, too, DLibrasnow?

Only with Volume 1 so I thought it was just that I had got one that had that issue.

Yeah, TSWLM is another fantastic transfer, and another film that was never that much of a favourite of mine that but became a terrific watch thanks to the UE treatment.

Along with TWSLM and MOONRAKER, DR. NO, THUNDERBALL and LTK are all superb on the image and sound front. :)

From what you're saying sounds like I'm going to need a new big screen TV. The one I have is a 1997 53 or 54 inch projection TV. The pictures not great anymore most of the green color stuff looks like grow in the dark especially when listening to the weather when a lot green is used for the map, and never good when watch militay/spy movie with computer screens. Watching the Sentinel was not good when it came to the menu screen could not even read the words very well. Looks like with out that new TV then I'm going to be missing out on it.

Hi there,

I followed the discussion about the US release of the bond movies.
I gotta admit that the US market really seems to be fooled this time, personally I bought the attache case in GB in July when it was first released (I

Thanks,

I forgot something - anybody who wants to see the cover artworks for the UE, maybe you should check out this:

All Ultimate Edition Covers (Front and Back Artworks)

I found them on the web in July when UE was first released in GB, but the artwork will be same for the US release. The resolution of these cover previews is pretty good, so you can get an impression of all the covers already.
Cheers,
dk

The R2 release isn't even an option for me. Nicer packaging means little to me. The R1s have the original sound mixes and run at the correct speed and the original burned in subtitles.

I agree.
And CBn regulars will be amazed to hear me say that because I am one of the biggest region-free player advocates here on CBn. In total I have about 150 DVDs from Region 2 and Region 4 (mostly for movies not yet released in the USA).

So is it now safe to say that I could trade in my old SE sets toward the new UE sets and not fear losing any content or audio?

True, but for one exception. The DAD UE is labelled as having new special features, plus the features that were on the original dvd release. The new features are on the disk, but the old features didn't make it on.

But the UE sets are worth it nonetheless.

Regarding the movies being out of order: though it is quite annoying, I can see some kind of logic in their ordering. They seem to have included one Bond film from each actor in each set. If you have a favorite film, you will then be forced to buy the set that it's in. Not surprisingly it is only a way to make more money.

The exterior packaging is very beautiful, though, and makes me forget the inconvenience of having the films out of order (the slim-cases too). However, and maybe it's just me, but the first couple sets seem to contain more bottom of the barrel movies, in my opinion. DAF, TMWTGG, AVTAK, and DAD? I can't wait until the second release! I don't know why they just didn't release them all at once.

The deed is done. I traded all of my SE DVDs today and got $120 in store credit. I feel lonely. It is as if a part of me has been amputated. I cannot wait until volume 3 and 4 are released...

I finally got around to opening R1 sets 3 and 4 the other day and giving all the discs and cases a good once over. Apologies if this has been mentioned already, but I am bothered by the fact that the titles on the cases for FRWL and YOLT use the previously established "MGM home video" fonts from their VHS/SE DVD days while ALL the other movie cases as well as ALL the discs (even for these two movies) use original poster fonts for the titles. I know this is the height of nitpicky fanboy complaining, but my OCD is working overtime when I look at the spines on the shelf and see that "two of these things are not like the others."

Yeah, it seems odd that they left those two out.
