It's been a number of years since I've watched The World is not Enough (we're talking pre-Casino Royale). I'd always rather liked it (it was my first Bond in theatres), but after revisiting it tonight, I think I'm forced to re-evaluate that opinion.

Pity - I liked standing up for The World is not Enough. I'd always considered it a bit of an unappreciated gem whose only flaw was Denise Richards. But I suspect next time I find myself debating it here on CBn, I'll be on the other side of the fence.

On the other hand, I rewatched Moonraker a few weeks back and it continues to age like a fine wine.

I give this a 8/10.
Is it a perfect Bond movie? Not really, but I find that there's alot to like about this film.
I think that Brosnan does a good job at showing emotion.
Robert Carlyle does a good job playing Renard.
The movie has a sad, but touching Q scene(R.I.P. Desmond Llewelyn).
And Sophie Marceau is a sexy bad Bond girl(I have a thing for female villains). Plus Robbie Coltrane returns as Valentin Zukovsky, who is one of my favorite Bond characters, and his sendoff was well done(I was sad to see him get killed, but his death is one of my favorites).

The only thing that I really don't like about the movie is the character of Christmas Jones. It felt to me like she was added to the script at the very last moment. Denise Richards was very clearly miscasted for the part. But I think that she's a better Bond girl then Tanya Roberts.

In going through the Bond films again I felt like giving this one another chance.

Going into it, I was really hoping I could come here and say my views of it had changed, and for a time...that's how I felt. The teaser is one of the better parts of this film, it's everything a Bond teaser should be: energetic, full of thrills and spills...and fun. Unfortunately after the main titles are over the film loses any sense of fun it could have had.

I really can't place the blame on one single thing, as the movie more or less is a failure on it's whole, but I think a better director would have at least elevated this material somewhat.

And oddly enough, my enthusiasm picked back up during the sub finale, which I found to be really entertaining this time out. At least it's the first time in the movie since the teaser where the film feels like it has real forward momentum and is not just trudging along because the public demands a Bond film every two years.

I gave this a five last time I reviewed it, but my feelings on it are even worse now. I think a 2 is fair in reflecting my feelings.

That pretty much sums up my feelings on the film, although you're more generous to it than I am at this point. I'd easily give it a 0 if I hadn't already voted in the poll (have no idea what I gave it when I voted), and at this point in time, I honestly feel embarrassed for having ever having liked the film. In my view, each Bond actor who made more than two films had at least one turkey of a film to his credit, and this is one of Brosnan's two.

This movie seems to divide opinion sharply. I've been going through the canon in order, and for me it's one of the best ones. It's formulaic, but follows the formula perfectly. Carver is delightfully mad and hammy, the relationship between Bond and Q is a joy to watch, and that between Bond and Wai Lin. The action scenes are a bit too much for my taste, but they are well done. The film seems to be loosely based on TSWLM, but done so much better. Best scene for me is the one with Dr. Kaufman - the perfect Bond henchman!

Given the subject matter of the thread, are you sure you watched the right film?

I can sympathise with the decision not to review The World is not Enough; even more so a decision not to watch it.
