I agree, most of them ARE great, but of course, I'm gonna say TLD, as an answer to the thread question.
Very professional, no nonsense, which is how Fleming writes Bond on a mission. It was refreshing to have a break from the one liners. Bond likes sex. Bond likes women. But, he's not written as a fool about either.

Connery in DN and Moore in LALD. They are both great in their first Bondfilms.

BTW, I think Brosnan is overall a better Bond than Lazenby/Dalton but his performance in GE was really awful and dull. The worst 'first Bond'.

According to the thread's question:
1 -- Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights
2 -- Sean Connery in Dr. No
3 -- Pierce Brosnan in GoldenEye
4 -- Roger Moore in Live And Let Die
5 -- George Lazenby in On Her Majesty's Secret Service

As for my personal favorite of the films:
1. GoldenEye
2. The Living Daylights
3. Live And Let Die
4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
5. Dr. No

Connery is undoubtedly the best Bond, but he was a bit rought around the edges in Dr. No. Lazenby was wooden, Moore was unsure, and Dalton had zero preesnce in Goldeneye.

Dalton was the only actor that hit the ground running, his performance in Daylights was that of an actor who had played Bond for several years (I wish that was the case).

Connery in Dr. No and Dalton in The Living Daylights.

Actually, they're probably the two best portrayals overall, as opposed to merely the best first time efforts.

In order of greatness

1 - OHMSS (The second best Bond film ever, after TSWLM)
2 - Dr No (Great film, and Connery nailed the Bond persona straight away)
3 - GE (Just about an excellent return from the cinematic wilderness)
4 - TLD (Excellent start by Dalton, and a very good film to get)
5 - LALD (As much as I love it, it is one of the weaker Moore films)

Well said.

Connery in Dr. No is also really good (the airport/arrival in Jamaica scenes are some of my favorite Bond moments ever), as is Moore in LALD. Both cool, dark performances in enjoyably off-beat adventures. I don't much care for GE Brosnan, as it feels like he wasn't playing James Bond so much as Dalton-Moore-greatesthits-Bond. TND felt more like the real Brosnan first.

Dalton had zero preesnce in Goldeneye.

Unfortunately. :)

For me Dr No needs to be taken out of the running - it's so far ahead as to make the comparison meaningless. Out of the rest, I would go with Dalton's performance, but Lazenby's movie. If only I could switch their movies around.... sigh

I actually like all the debuts, except for Roger Moore's. I think he only grew into the role in TSWLM.

While they are all great films, I'll say Dr. No or The Living Daylights. :)

Agreed 100%. Daltons first run as Bond in The Living Daylights was the best. Even his intro scene was great..

Dalton had the best PTS in TLD, although Goldeneye was good fun too.

OHMSS had the coolest first glimpses of Bond in the car, lighting a cigarette.

I'm alwasy blown away by Dalton's acting ability. It seems so strange, following on from Moore who gets by on being pure, solid charm through and through. Dalton in TLD shows that Bond can be done by an actor, that there are details that need an actor. Bond's reaction after whatshisface is killed in Vienna always surprises me. It's just a pity that he didn't have any of that charm that Connery and Moore made compulsory.

I think that for his first and only Bond movie, George Lazenby couldn't have been better - you definitely miss him at the beginning of "Diamonds Are Forever".

Brosnan was my favourite Bond but I think Jimmy's just about right with what he's said there.
Although I do think Brosnan had presence in GE, TLD was the best because Dalton was very secure in his first time role.

OHMSS was a very strong bond film, but Lazenby was terrible in it. I didn't have too much of a thing for Dalton, but I thought The Living Daylights was a good first Bond film.

The Living Daylights is an easy choice for me since it's my favorite film in the franchise anyway. On Her Majesty's Secret Service was also an outstanding first (and, sadly, last) film for Lazenby.
