OK, I'm having a ball re-reading the whole lot in english, but some dialogues sometime just makes me cringe. Was there any editor working on the book ?

Here's an example from Licence Renewed, totally out of character from Bond during the M briefing :

"Don't suppose he just likes dressing up in high-class ladies clothes or something likes that ?" Bond grinned.

That made me totally cringe... "Bond grinned". So Bond think it's funny the picture of a man in ladies clothes... ahr ahr ahr... The next line could have been "Bond then went back to the pub with his factory workers friends, making jokes about poofters while downing Miller highlife" :)

Get your own cringe worthy Gardner moments in this thread... it might be fun !

Well he *is* British, and we of course love that sort of thing.

Ripping good laugh.

I don't know. I say we cut Mr. Gardner some slack. He gave us 14 original Bond novels and two novelizations. He's one of the reasons I'm a Bond fan. Every book by every author contains some groaners. There's some pretty weird stuff in Fleming (homosexuals can't whistle?). I think we should send Mr. Gardner only good mojo. :)

Besides, Bond grins...Mr. Gardner just left off the word "cruel."

Oh, I don't think it's necessary to cut someone some slack just because they produced a lot of novels. Regardless of how much one respects Mr. Gardner for keeping the franchise alive, he still produced some cringe-worthy stuff. What, we don't critcise Fleming enough for his shortcomings? I think it's all fair.

And since I've got The Man from Barbarossa out from the library, I'll contribute:

"Not a couple getting away for a little fling, sir?" Bond asked with an innocent deadpan face.

For some reason I find the mental image very comical.

Is that from the briefing scene ? I have a feeling Gardner had most of his gems into these scenes, trying to liven things up.

I never said all Gardner stuff was bad, I do enjoy reading these books, just that some moments are a bit not in character for Bond.

Can't remember anything totally outstanding other than something along the lines of;

"Bond thought Disney World was a good place to be"

Death is Forever? I think.
