in the MI6 Vault section on the OCTOPUSSY DVD there are quite some bits of footage dealing with James Brolin as possible successor of Roger Moore as James Bond. Funny how in the recent interviews his looks are not unlike those of George Lazenby (nowadays).

But even more striking was when my girl friend mentioned she thought that at some moments in the OCTO test footage Brolin looked like an older Christian Bale. I agree with her on this! Is it just us, or...?

James Brolin played PW Herman in the movie "Pee Wee's Big Adventure." Some Hollywood slick sort took the innocent story of Pee Wee looking for his missing bicycle, and turned it into a James Bond type flick. His bicycle was now some super secret motorcycle, and his innocent and platonic girl friend was now played by Morgan Fairchild in a sky blue Diana Rigg like rig. Pee Wee played a bell hop in the movie, where PW signs into a hotel, but they dubbed another actor's voice that was loud and booming.

Having seen the screen test at the '94 Bond Con in Los Angeles, I think Brolin would've made a better Matt Helm than Bond.

I understand they might be working on another Matt Helm movie and that they're trying to get Matt Dillon for the part.

Back in the early 90's there was a Saint movie on TV that was odd, because it seemed like a pilot and the Saint was more like Tom Sellick, although I don't remember the actor's name. I remember thinking it was more suitable for Pierce Brosnan. This was before he assumed the role of Bond without becoming Bond for me.

I saw that screen test. Don't think Brolin would be a good Bond simply because he's not English.

Agree 100% - but I noticed it the other way round, reckoning Bale in Batman was very much like Brolin facially.

Saint in Manhatten? Andrew Clarke?

I'd never noticed that but, damn, yes, Bale looks loads like a young Brolin:

He looks more like Brolin's son than Brolin's son does.

Just rewatched the screentest on the OP DVD and they are really intresting.

He's not totally wrong for Bond, IMHO. I can't put my finger on it but James Brolin has, in a way, the same personality/style that made both Connery and Moore so successful in the role (he has ten times more charisma than Dalton and Craig combined). At his worst moments he reminds me of Brosnan's Bond. At his best moments he comes off as an improved version of Brosnan's Bond (they are very similiar).

Still, I'm not sure if an american accent would be a good thing for Bond no matter how good the actor is.

Come on, you buy that just from a screentest you'd rank him above 3 of the 6 actors to play Bond?

Brolin seems way too laid back to be Bond, almost like David Duchovney.

He wasn't bad in his screen test at all, but he's not Euro enough and kinda has a reputation of being cheesy TV actor...

Relax. I didn't rank him. I gave my opinion on the screen-tests. Nothing more, nothing less.
