Alright, before anyone accuses me of not paying attention, I have closely watched "Casino Royale" several times now.

But still... could someone PLEASE explain the plot to me? What was the point of Cooper??

They were going to train a bunch of men to pretend to be James Bond to throw off the villians.

Do not bother with the plot. Just admire the most gorgeous line-up of female talent to grace a Bond movie - Ursula Andress, Joanna Pettet, Angela Scoular, Jacqueline Bisset, Alexandra Bastedo, Caroline Munro, etc. What I would have given to see that lot together in a proper Bond movie.

Pretty much the only way to enjoy this movie.

I don't understand Casino Royale (1967) either but I'm glad it was campy so that we'd get the real Casino Royale in 2006.

Alright, I think I figured it out. It's not all that hard to understand, once you know that the Evelyn stuff was edited in the wrong order.

James Bond is retired and living privately. After he left, as a tribute, the secret service began naming new recruits "James Bond 007". But they turned out to be buffoons, so M goes to James's house to tempt him back. But M is killed when his troops try to "seal the deal" by blowing up Bond's swanky house. Bond attends his funeral, where the members of M's family have been replaced with female SMERSH agents. However, the leader of the operation, Agent Mimi, blows the cover by falling in love with James. She is wounded by her own people, and decides to leave the life of crime and become a nun.

So, Bond takes over as the new M. He is told that the deaths of the other 007's involved sex, so the next recruit must be trained to resist women. This is Cooper - but unfortunately, SMERSH operative Dr. Noah kidnaps him. So, Bond decides that the next recruit will be female. He chooses his daughter, Mata Bond. She is sent to a spy school in Berlin which was also attended by her mother, Mata Hari. While there, she discovers an art auction controlled by SMERSH member Le Chiffre, who is trying to raise money after he gambled with soviet funds. She interrupts the auction, and Le Chiffre decides that his next method will be to play baccarat.

Bond turns to the extremely rich Vesper Lynd (who is secretly working for SMERSH) to seduce Evelyn Tremble, a baccarat expert. Evelyn will pose as Bond and make Le Chiffre lose at Casino Royale. He does so, but both Vesper and Evelyn are kidnapped and tortured. Turning the tables, Vesper murders Evelyn, but it's too late - Le Chiffre has failed, and is killed by SMERSH.

Having had enough of losing to James Bond, Dr. Noah kidnaps Mata. In a tip from a money-seeking nun (Agent Mimi), James learns that Mata is being taken to Casino Royale - Dr. Noah's lair. Bond and Moneypenny venture there and find not only a crew of kidnapped 007's, but that Dr. Noah is in fact his pathetic nephew, Jimmy Bond. Jimmy is about to unleash germ warfare - a disease that makes all women beautiful and kills men shorter than he is. But James gets too close, and Jimmy unleashes his goons on Bond and Moneypenny as escapes.

Unwilling to be defeated, Jimmy tries to prove that he is just as much man as his uncle James - he imprisons The Detainer (a female 007) and tries to prove his strength to her, but she laughs at him. So, he reveals not only his secret plan to make robotic clones of the world's great leaders, but also that he made an atomic bomb the size of an aspirin. She pretends to give in, but slips the pill into his drink.

Meanwhile, Bond and Moneypenny help the other 007's to escape from the lair, and back into Casino Royale. Bond receives word that Jimmy swallowed the bomb, and that the place is about to blow. However, he is threatened by the now-exposed Vesper, who is killed. The casino patrons erupt into chaos as people scramble to escape, and Bond is forced to get backup help from international armies. But it's too late - Jimmy hiccups and Casino Royale explodes, killing everyone inside, including the 007's.

That should've shed a little light on it... hope I didn't leave out anything important.

Actually, as I understand it, the character was added after Peter Sellers left the production early (either quit or was fired, depending who you ask). However, the production was so chaotic, they didn't rework the material enough for him to fill in the gaps left by Seller's departure- he just ended up shooting some scenes Sellers hadn't done yet (this is what you get when no one's actually in charge...).I'm actually fond of parts of the film (especially the ample displays of 1960's pulchritude- I swear, woman were just hotter then!), although I concede it's not a good movie. (The only sustained section that really holds up for me is the Mata Bond sequence... and apparently Cubby Brocolli agreed, as he hired THAT director for CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG!)
