From Russia with Love is still safe for a few more months.
For me, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN remains on the throne. Although I'm aware that many Bond fans believe it should be in it.
I do, however, think that CASINO ROYALE will be one of the better Bond flicks, probably the best since LICENCE TO KILL, which is reason enough to get excited.

You are truly in your own private Phuket with that choice Loomis!
But if Casino Royale is the best 007 flick since the 80s, as I hope it is, I'll be a happy fan.

Yeah, well, Phuket.
Sorry.

Every Bond film except Octopussy and A View to a Kill has held that distinction for at least a week after my first viewing. Casino Royale will not be an exception, I’m sure.

It'll take something impressive indeed to dethrone Licence To Kill and/or Timothy Dalton on my list of favorites, but I think CR at least has the source material, story premise, and leading man to give it a fighting chance (best yet). Optimistic about the movie generally, just still need to be blown away to crown it anything.

But I do think CASINO ROYALE will be pretty damn good.

I have no doubt that Casino Royale will be the best James Bond film ever.

I know exactly what you mean! After I walked out of TWINE, I said "Mom, I think this is the best Bond film ever!" Now? Meh I don't recall if I felt that way about DAD though.

Y'know, I think that's valid, in its way; it reminds me of the well-known expression in SF fandom that "the Golden Age of Science Fiction is twelve".
For example, I think CR has a good chance to be as good as I now think TSWLM is. However, I have strong doubts that CR will be as good as I thought TSWLM was when I was seven...

"From Russia With Love" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" are probably the best from a traditional filmmaking standpoint. FRWL comes off as not much of a thriller and OHMSS has the middle third and "Lazenby is acting for the first time" working against it.

It's possible for the other films in the series, iconic as they are, to be topped. They all have flaws to varying degrees. That's why you don't generally see them on "top film" lists. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone outside of a Bond fanboy who doesn't think that Lucas (who specifially set out to make a "better film than Bond" when Broccoli shut him out) and Spielberg did it with "Raiders of the Lost Ark", just for one example.

You're right. I love the idea of Bond, and there are countless moments I adore, but for a Bond fan... I really don't love a lot of the films.
Casino Royale does have the potential to be one of the best, if only they have the guts to really make it different! But my pessimistic side tells me we'll never see a truly great Bond film until they give creative control to a visionary director. Doesn't it make you mad that Christopher Nolan would LOVE to direct a Bond film? And we get Roger Michell...

Who is Borat?
You don't know who everyone's favourite Kazakstani tv reporter is?. ALi G's alter ego and much funnier. Has a film due out end of this year.
See his reporting. Yakshamash. He likes making the gym, ping pong and shooting bears for fun.

might even rival CR.

Wait till it is released, or even wait until they show it on the TV on a Bank Holiday Monday before we can decide it's ranking.

I strongly doubt that there will be wide acknowledgement of the movie as the best ever film, but I'm more than prepared to put it in my top few films. I think that going into the cinema with negative preconceptions of Daniel Craig is a pretty pointless exercise. Enjoy the movie. I would be very very surprised if people consider DIE ANOTHER DAY better than CASINO ROYALE in the long run. The script is great - I'm sure that it cannot be messed up too much!
In the mean time, let the disagreements and disputes continue. That's what makes this a Bond discussion board - personal preferences over actors, styles and tone of movies. There is no correct answer to any of this.

For me though, The Spy Who Loved Me sits at the top.

Everything about Casino Royale seems to be pushing it towards being one of the best, so...
For me though, The Spy Who Loved Me sits at the top.
You're right, everything does see to be pointing towards Casino Royale being one of the best, if not the best, film in the series. There is so much potential for this film, that I can't imagine a scenario in which this film couldn't be one of the better ones in the franchise. For me, it's got everything that I've wanted in a Bond film. We've got Craig, my first choice for Bond, we've got Eva Green as Vesper (who is about as perfect a choice for the role as possible), a seemingly great Le Chiffre (I don't know much about Mikkelsen, but he looks good as the villain), great actors in the roles of Mathis and Leiter, a more than competent director (and the best director this franchise has seen in over a decade and a half), and we've got the best Fleming novel of them all to draw the story from. The only way that this film could end up being a bad film is for something to go drastically wrong in the editing room, and I think that it's in safe hands with Martin Campbell and his crew.
