Since in essence CR is a start a fresh we will obviously be encountering a new Q at some point. I am really pleased they got rid of John Cleese, who i should add i love, but it was all getting to bloody panto like in the Brosnan films.....

So i thought we could start a fun thread where by we suggest actors to take over the Q mantle....personally my feelings are that he should be British and be of a similar age as Bond.

My initial thought are Jeremy Northam, he is British, similar age, comes across as a stern dictitorial type and will know DC well after filming the Visiting together.

Its only my 2 pence but i would be interested to know what others ideas are....

Interesting - Northam was once a rumored Bond candidate. Somehow I feel he is looking too handsome for Q.

My personal taste is this: Q should remain humorous - would love to see Ricky Gervais do it - or... and this would be totally different: have a woman do it. I know, M already is a woman, but if you go down that route, I

Northam was touted as Bond a few years ago and certainly has the style to play a suave agent. I would suggest he could be better suited to being cast as a contemporary of Bond, possibly another 00, maybe even 001, in a future film. He could become a renegade agent who Bond is sent to capture or kill.

As for a future Q, perhaps EON should get as far away from an older Desmond Llewellyn type as possible. I would suggest they cast a young woman as the technical equipment expert, rather than 'gadget master'. Perhaps they could cast Rachel Stirling, who many would have liked to have seen as Vesper. This could be played out as Bond and the new Q as having a cool mutual respect for each other, but with a background sexual tension. (I never thought I would ever make that statement). This could also replace any future need for a new Moneypenny.

Have they gotten rid of Cleese? That's the first I've heard of that. The last I heard is that he is signed up for at least two more films.

To be honest my first choice for the role would have been Simon Pegg who many UK people will know has a big fan base and even got a bit part in the new MI3 film, unfortunately they cast him in the exact sort of role, a Q-esque tech assistant so really its too late.

I think an age equal to bond or younger is def the way to go, you need mileage from an actor in this role and perhaps you need to go with an unknown, Paul Bettany in my eyes is a terrible choice plus he has a career which is far bigger than a continous supporting bit part.

Northam is a non-starter simply because Q would immediately become significantly more handsome and dapper than Bond and that would be somewhat jarring.I watched the film 'Wilde' over the weekend and my suggestion for Bond 22 is Stephen Fry as Q and Tom Wilkinson as M.

Yes, he's certainly a bigger star than John Cleese.

And would doing Q for two days every two or three years really put a damper on one's career? One certainly wouldn't do it for the money. More likely because it's fun to be a part of Bond.

If you think Bettany is 'terrible' for the part, fine. I don't. I think he could bring an understated witty intelligence to the role, without resorting to mugging. Sort of an intelligent take on Q.

... Ricky Gervais, by the way, co-wrote and starred in the original "The Office" on BBC and the also hilarious "Extras". When Abrams cast him in "Alias", Gervais was supposed to act totally different, i.e. very serious which he pulled off. I

I always thought Q should be a bit older than Bond; but perhaps that's the influence of the late DL (gee I miss his performances!!!)

Nice idea. I think he could very comfortably do the tongue in cheek, dryly witty thing - see A Knight's Tale or Master & Commander as reference. Having said that, can also see the relative merits of Simon Pegg or Ricky Gervais.

And, if they wanted a grumpy gadget-master in a similar mould to Desmond L, how about Michael Gambon? Or Ken Stott (currently playing Inspector Rebus on TV)?

If we get a new Q actor why not create a different interpretation of the character? Make him a young techno geek who, at first, looks up to Bond, until 007 starts destroying his precious gadgets. Let's also have Bond not appreciate Q very much until one of his gadgets saves his life.

A female Q isn't a bad idea either.

but can Q NOT say "oooooh DO grow up Double-0 Seven"

it was get a bit panto....

a GAY guy wouldn't be a bad idea at all...21st Century Bond...it would be a good metrosexual foil to DC's football thug screen image..

i think having Q with a foreign accent would be fun. MI6 were recently recruiting Muslims or at least ARAB speakers .....so an Asian dude with or without a Manchester accent?

OR a Former KGB guy, livingout his years passing on Russian secrets from the Cold War?

please no Americans (no offence)....

how about an OLd Sergeant Major type...like that bloke from 'it aint' half hot mum!" Ivor someone ...forgot his name.,..big moustahce, red cheeks and loud voice..

If they get a fit bird, they should intimate she is also GAY ..so BOND can have a real challenge........

what about a Princess Anne type.

bugger no thats not good! I shouldn't come on here when I ve been drinking I shall leave

They didn't flinch in re-hiring Judi Dench, and that alone makes me believe they won't recast Cleese either. Personally, I cringe at him in TWINE (can't stand his dismissal trapped inside the air bag). I loved him in DIE ANOTHER DAY, however, and felt that was one of the few scenes in that was actually well-written.

I've thought for a long time that BBC Television Presenter Peter Snow would make an excellent 'Q'. He has so much character. He's optimistic, great with technology and looks just right.

I think that either of those two would be the way to go (the first one could be great fun!) if and when John Cleese is replaced. I liked his scene in DAD, although it didn't give much sense of how his character would pan out in future films. It was fine once, but I wouldn't want him to be a carbon copy of DL's Q.

If you're going to have a female Q, I wouldn't make her anything like Moneypenny for similar reasons. Maybe an older, middle aged woman? Julie Walters as Q? Just an idea of the top of my head.

Or Eddie Izzard, anyone?

David Jason - has the right balance of humour and serious acting (A Touch of Frost, Porridge, Open All Hours, Only Fools and Horses)

I agree it makes more sense for Q to be younger, more of a whiz-kid type. The Ricky Gervais suggestion is a case of "right idea, wrong pussy". (We need to save Ricky for a villain role!) So step forward, Mackenzie Crook (Gareth from The Office, and shiller of Pirates of the Caribbean-related M & M's). Not a big enough star to be too big for Q, and perfect for eccentric/oddball roles.
