Ok General Koskov, you talked me into it.

How old is James Bond? Yes, I know Pierce Brosnan is 48, but George Lazenby was 29 when he played James Bond. And when Roger Moore departed, Bond went from late-fifties to mid-forties overnight. I recall hearing somewhere that Fleming's original requirements for 00's included mandatory retirement at age 40. The 00's must be in prime physical condition after all. Anyone know if that's true?

Yeah, but on the plus side, George Lazenby would have done a hell of a lot more films!

Please, no need to give me nightmares, once was more than enough ;-) Putting aside matters of like and dislike of Mr Lazenby he'd have been ousted after TMWTGG for a younger model. Followed by Dalton for TSWLM- FYEO then Pierce from Octopussy - LTK (lucky Pierce, he gets AVTAK and LTK, EEK!) And then the dark years with Hugh Grant in Property Of A Lady, GE & TND then a 15 year gap to get over that... and Daniel Radcliff in 2013 in TWINE!

When Sean Connery commented (or was asked to) on Roger's age in A View to a Kill or Octopussy, he said something like: 'James Bond should be played by someone in their mid-thirties: thirty-three to thirty-five.'

Wasn't Sean older than that?

Only if you start the role immeadiately. The second you turn 36 you're out!

It's like Logan's Run but at 35 instead of 30. ;-)

Personally, I've always thought of Bond being in his forties. Sometimes in his late thirties, too. Remember, it takes time to develop a tolerance to all those martinis and the alcohol consumption. And the cigarettes and cigars, too. His lungs and liver must be in sad shape by now...

M. calls Bond a 'pig-headed young fool' in You Only Live Twice, so Bond at least must be younger than M.! :)

It's all explained here:

James Bond 007 is a Time Lord, and I can prove it!

Well according to that age parameter, Brosnan would never have been Bond, ditto Dalton or Moore and Connery would have made only 4 films. The idea of a 25 yr old Bond makes me kind of queasy.

MBE pretty much nails it.The great thing about being a Time Lord is that James Bond can smoke and drink to excess, womanize to his heart's content and drive his body to the very limits-- all the while secure in the certain knowledge that a newer and younger model is waiting just around the corner...

In Thunderball the Medical Officer gives a report on his health that says '[Bond's] liver is not palpable'. So perhaps half a bottle of liquor a day isn't that bad...

That site is screwy! :) Half the names are wrong, and the person actually thinks the actors are supposed to look different!
Well, I suppose that's what one can expect after fifty years of James Bond!

In the books, Fleming kept changing Bond's DOB to ensure that he would always be under 40 years of age. This makes it almost impossible to determine how old he actually is.
The film Bond's generally have the same years of birth as the actor portraying them.

In answer to the question, who knows?

In Moonraker, Bond has eight years until he reached the age of forty-five, when he would be taken off the active list and given a desk job as SIS. In Pearson's book (just began reading it), Bond is fifty-two years of age.

I think we are to assume the radiation in Dr No's island made Bond unable to age! :)

As for the books, I could have seen Bond retiring a few books after The Man with the Golden Gun.
