I'm sure some of our members must have had a gander at these magazines. I've heard not so great things about them, but I'm always tempted to purchase them, as I love Bond-related magazines.

Can anyone offer any perspective? I'm guessing the text is not worth much, but are there at least some pictures we've not seen published umpteen times previously?

Any feedback appreciated.

If you can get them cheap, why not?

I don't recall there being any spectacular unpublished pictures within the magazine. There aren't a whole lot of positive things to be said about SPY FILES as a matter of fact.

Bought a package of some 20 of them a while ago, for 10 bucks, or so.

Nothing spectacular. They're aimed at a 10-14 year old demographic, so everyting has to be recognizable (which means: nothing previously unseen). Vehicles, locations and gadgets descriptions are a bit like in Alastair Dougal's "Ultimate James Bond". Apart from that, there are mission summaries, photo sequences of action scenes, sheets on villains and allies. Some quizzes and puzzles. Oh, and of course some usefull informations on "Spy Secrets" ("Top tailing techniques" or "Booby trap your room"), as well as "Field Skills", such as fighting all sorts of animals (fierce fish, snakes, sharks and alligators), escaping avalanches and outer space survival.

Don't know how many there were, the highest issue I have is #29.

If you desperatly need to buy them, be aware of the following:
each issue came with "fact cards" (vehicles, locations, villains, allies, Q-branch and "Special Edition" cards ("Agent Warning")), the started with 12 per issue, then switched to 10 at some point. An introductional promo issue says that there are 150 altogether. Issue #1 came with a small embossed 007 tin, containing divider cards (tin was to be used for swaps and doubles). #2 came with a cardboard magazine case. #4 came with a big embossed 007 tin for all collecting cards. There were also some "Q branch decoding lenses" which are needed to solve some of the quizzes. Subscribers to the mag received a "Q branch recording pen device" (with 007 logo, of course) as a gift.

For completists only.

To put them in perspective, I bought them a couple of years ago for my six year old... he didn't find them very interesting, God knows where the mags are now and the cards keep turning up in various places in his bedroom

Most definitely. As I posted earlier on the same topic: still whish I had my money back.

Attached a pic of the ones I have. Don't ask why I have only the ones with Brosnan on the cover. Maybe the guy I bought them from only had the Brosnan ones. Or maybe he only wanted to get rid of the Brosnan ones (mind you: Brosnan was still Bond when I got these).

Thanks for the feedback Jordan, Heiko and David. Confirms what I've suspected. I'll take a pass and save my money for other things.
