similar to my James Bond vs. Inspector Clouseau, this thread explores all the similarities and connections between James Bond and Batman.

here's a list of what i've come up with so far:
  • both Bruce Wayne and James Bond were orphaned at a young age
  • very little background is given about the formative years of Bruce Wayne's and James Bond's lives
  • both Batman and Bond use fancy, often futuristic gadgets
  • both Batman and Bond drive special cars rigged with numerous gadgets
  • James Bond seems to have a bottomless budget; Bruce Wayne is a billionaire
  • both Bruce Wayne and James Bond are often seen at black tie events and are noted for their classiness
  • Batman has to protect his secret identity and his secret hide-out; James Bond is a part of MI6 - "secret service" - with its own secrets to hide
  • the stories for both Batman and Bond are always a case of good vs evil
  • both Batman and Bond have been pitted against some truly "over-the-top" villains
  • both Batman and Bond have been repeatedly placed in seemingly inescapable perils, and then had to use their wits (and often gadgets) to escape
  • Bond has Q; Batman has Alfred or Lucious Fox (depending on what version of the story you go to)
  • both series include women in diverse roles. the women in the Batman series seem to always be "independent women". they have jobs, and to an extent, they are very aggressive. at the same time, they seem to always end up in perilous situations from which Batman must save them. at once, they are both the liberated woman and the damsel in distress. i think the same can be said for women in the Bond series. they're always out there trying to get things done on their own, but yet, they always need Bond's help to get them out of bad spots.
  • both Batman and Bond have been represented in books, comic strips, TV programs, radio shows, films, and various figurines and other merchandise over the years
  • both franchises were started in excess of 50 years ago, and have evolved over the years
  • both Batman and Bond have been portrayed in varying incarnations, from campy to deathly serious
  • the first cinematic Batman was played by Lewis Wilson (The Batman, 1943), who was Michael G. Wilson's biological father (Dana Broccoli's first husband)
  • Adam West was approached to play James Bond after Sean Connery stepped down
  • although Batman was created 14 years before James Bond, Adam West said in a 1966 interview that "Batman is a projection of James Bond, only more far out."
  • in episode #39 of the 1966 Batman TV series, the villain was The Minstrel. in the opening minutes of the show, The Minstrel announces on TV that he was running a "protection agency", and he says: "Make your checks payable to account number oh, oh, seven and mail it to the Broccoli Bank..."
  • in 1966 there was apparently a little known film called James Batman; a plot summary on xoomer.virgilio.it says "Batman, Robin and James Bond join forces to battle an evil warlord who is holding the world to ransom with a nuclear weapon"; here is the IMDB page about this movie, though it also doesn't have much info available
  • writer Paul Haggis has openly admitted that the script for CR '06 has been strongly influenced by the success of Batman Begins
  • 1989's Batman is widely considered to be one of the grittiest Batman movies to date; Licence To Kill was released the same year, and is also considered to be one of the grittiest Bond movies to date
  • Del Baker did stunts in OP, AVTAK, and TLD, and he played a hood in Batman (1989)
  • Christian Bale was touted by many as a favorite "candidate" to be the 6th 007, and these pictures from Batman Begins were used to show that Bale would look good as James Bond:
    http://www.cinecon.c...albuo56/abi.jpg
    http://www.cinecon.c...albuo56/abq.jpg
  • Kim Basinger played Domino Petachi in NSNA, and she played Vicki Vale in Batman (1989)
  • Alexandra Bastedo played "Meg" in CR '67, and she played a "Gotham Society Dame" in Batman Begins (2005)
  • Nicky Blair played a character named "Shivers" in a couple episodes of the 1966 Batman TV show, and a hotel doorman in Diamonds Are Forever
  • James Brolin, who was once considered to replace Roger Moore as James Bond (snippets from his screen test can be seen in the "making of" docu on the SE DVD for Octopussy) earlier appeared in three episodes of the 1966 Batman TV series
  • Nadia Cameron-Blakey played Beth Davidson in TND, and she appeared as an unnamed restaurant guest in Batman Begins (2005)
  • George Lane Cooper played an unnamed SPECTRE agent in DAF, and did stunts for OHMSS, DAF, and OP before going on to play an unnamed goon in Batman (1989)
  • Dick Crockett played "Morgan" in Batman: The Movie (1966), and he played the Crane Operator on Blofeld's oil rig in Diamonds Are Forever
  • Clive Curtis was a stuntman in TSWLM, FYEO, OP, NSNA, and AVTAK; also, he played a henchman in FYEO and a salesman at the Eiffel Tower in AVTAK; and he was a stuntman and played a goon in the bell tower in Batman (1989)
  • Sammy Davis Jr. popped his head out a window in an episode of the 1966 Batman TV series; and then he had a scene in the casino in Diamonds Are Forever (unfortunately, his scenes were cut from DAF, but they are available on the SE DVD)
  • Paul Engelen was one of the lead make-up artists on Batman (1989) as well as an artist working on The Spy Who Loved Me
  • Sid Haig was the Royal Apothecary in a couple episodes of the 1966 Batman TV show, and in Diamonds Are Forever, he was one of the attendants at Slumber Inc.
  • Jazzer Jeyes was a stuntman in YOLT, DAF, TSWLM, FYEO, OP, and AVTAK, and he played a hood in Batman (1989)
  • Jill St. John played Tiffany Case in DAF, and she played The Riddler's assistant, Molly, in the pilot episode of the 1966 Batman TV series
    http://www.geocities...966/STJ792S.JPG
    http://www.geocities...966/STJ793S.JPG
  • George Lazenby (i forget who he played in a James Bond film ) provided the voice for "The King" in several episodes of the Batman Beyond cartoon, plus he voiced "Mr. Walker/The King" in Batman Beyond: The Movie
  • Wayne Michaels was a stuntman in FYEO, OP, NSNA, AVTAK, GE, and TND (he actually doubled for Brosnan in GE and TND); he was also listed in the credits for GE as playing "Tiger Helicopter Pilot/Mr. Gone to Heaven"; and he played a hood in Batman (1989)
  • Valentino Musetti was a stuntman in NSNA, AVTAK, TLD, LTK, and TND, and he played a hood in Batman (1989)
  • Liam Neeson, who turned down the opportunity to play James Bond in GoldenEye, played Henri Ducard in Batman Begins (2005)
  • Terence Plummer played an unnamed thug in TMWTGG and TND, and he played an unnamed goon in Batman (1989)
  • Steve Plytas played a Greek tycoon in OHMSS and a doctor in Batman (1989)
  • George Robotham was a stuntman on both the 1949 "Batman and Robin" serial and Diamonds Are Forever
  • Catherine Porter was credited as playing "Ice Palace Party Guest" in DAD, and as playing "Blonde Female Reporter/Assassin" in Batman Begins (2005)
  • Shane Rimmer was uncredited as playing the radar operator in Hawaii in YOLT and a character named Tom in DAF; he was, however, credited for playing Commander Carter in TSWLM; and he played the older Gotham Water board technician in Batman Begins (2005)
  • Wally Rose was a stuntman in both Batman: The Movie (1966) and Diamonds Are Forever
  • Liza Ross played Mary Golson in TND and a tourist mother in Batman (1989)
  • Vincent Schiavelli played Dr. Kaufman in TND, and he played an organ grinder in Batman Returns (1992)
  • Lorenzo Semple Jr. wrote the screenplay for Batman: The Movie, and he was credited as the screenwriter for Never Say Never Again
  • Alex Sharp played a henchman in an episode of the 1966 Batman TV series; he also did stunts for both the 1966 Batman TV series and Diamonds Are Forever
  • Teru Shimada played the Japanese delegate in Batman: The Movie (1966), and he played Mr. Osato in You Only Live Twice
  • Mike Smith played a thug and performed stunts in Batman Forever (1995), and he was also a stuntman in TND
  • Fred Stromsoe played a henchman in Batman: The Movie, and he was a stuntman in Diamonds Are Forever
  • Rocky Taylor was a stuntman in DN, FRWL, GF, YOLT, TMWTGG, OP, NSNA, TND, and TWINE; he also played a thug in TMWTGG, a guard in NSNA, a thug in TND, a man in a restaurant in TWINE, and a man at the "Blades" club in DAD; and he played a hood in Batman (1989)
  • Uma Thurmon, who played Poison Ivy in Batman & Robin (1997) was rumored as Quentin Tarantino's pick to play Vesper if he'd been aloud to direct his version of Casino Royale
  • Christopher Walken played Max Zorin in AVTAK, and he played Max Shreck in Batman Returns (Max in both franchises!)
  • Vincent Wong played General Li in DAD; he played one of the crimelords in Batman (1989); and he provided the voice for an old Asian prisoner in the Batman Beyond cartoon series
i also think there's a connection between the main James Bond theme song and the theme to the 1966 Batman TV series. if anyone's interested, i'll post a clip i edited together that illustrates that point.

so what do you think? it's not just me, is it? i haven't gone Batty, have i? :D

isn't this wild?!

not sure if you mentioned it or not but the late great Dereck Meddings did mineture work on Batman (1989) and of course multiple Bonds.

likewise Special Effects wiz Chris Corbould worked on Batman Begins and has worked on most of Brosnan's bonds.

i only knew that because either Dana or Michael mentions it on the Cubby biography on the DAF DVD. It is still an interesting fact. And I guess you could count that Denny o'Niell modeled Ras Al Ghul on Blofeld. (and fu manchu, and moriarty...)

Also on the audio commentary for Batman Beyond Return of the Joker the producers comment on what big bond fans they are, stating OHMSS is their favourite and that they modeled the pacing and editing ofReturn of the Joker's PTS on the PTS of OHMSS. In particular they point to both of them having a quip delivered directly to camera at the end leading into the titles.

The finale of the Batman TAS episode the Demon's Quest has a bit of OO7 vibe with Ra's Al Ghul planning on destroying the world, Batman has to stop the traditional ticking clock and also fights two henchment in radiation suits who don't look too far removed from the guys in Doctor No's lair!

no, i hadn't noticed those two connections. thanks very much!

yeah, i did mention Lazenby above, but i hadn't seen the program, so i didn't know about him saying that line. that's pretty cool! and i'd never seen an address listed for Wayne Manor, so that's good to know as well. :D

thanks for the other tips about the cartoons, too. i never watched many of those, so i had no idea. very interesting!

Clouseau from where did you get all that info

well it all started because i was noticing a lot of these bits on my own. some of it i didn't discover, though, til i really started to look into it more. a lot of the information can be verified on IMDB or various other websites, but some of it, like i said, doesn't have an external source that i know of, because it's stuff i noticed on my own. it actually took me several days to compile all the information.

just goofing around on Google, i came across this poll:

In a fight to the death, who would win? James Bond or Batman?
http://www.misterpol...3072849357.html

it was apparently created some time ago, but only 115 votes have been cast, to date.
just thought i'd share.

Batman has a moral code not to kill or use guns.

Bond wins.

If it was a hand to hand duel, it would be hard to pick indeed.

I love bond but igot to go with Batmani'm a big comic book expert and Batman doesn't need a weapon to beat you he can take people down with his hands faster then someone with a weapon can.
