I was just rewatching the Casino Royale report on Extra and I noticed in an eyeblink shot we get a very good look at the gun Bond is using during the Madagascar sequence. Well, it's not a PPK (but we knew that), but it's also not the P99! In fact, it doesn't look like a Walther at all. It looks to me more like a Browning 9mm (at least it looks like the gun from the cover of License Renewed).

So you gun experts...check out the screen cap below and you tell me what the heck gun Bond is using?

I noticed that too Zen, I didn't study it too much but I thought it was a 1911.

You could be right about it being a Browning though.

However, he definitely has a P99 or maybe a P99C in some of the other pictures we've seen.

Zencat, I asked my friend who is a huge gun collector/hunter told me that it bares resemblance to a Colt. I know zip about guns..so I dunno, but just thought I could add to your curiosity!

It's got that generic-ish, Colt 1911/Browning Hi-Power/Smith and Wesson automatic look to it.

It'd be kinda cool to see Bond carry a Hi-Power, at least momentarily, but honestly it's probably just a Colt .45 (or derivative thereof) he snatched off some dead bad guy because something happened to his P99.

It's a variation of the Browning HP - Maybe a true Browning or one of the FN or Argentine Militia (like my own) models.

No doubt about it. The SAS still use them.

Looks to me like a 1911 or 1911-clone with rounded hammer as modern Colt uses on their autos. Nowadays it could be a Springfield, Colt or some others. The triggerguard suggests a single-action auto but it could even be a double-action one too. Difficult to see in the pic.

Browning Hi-Power 9mm. A longtime SAS favorite.

Indeed BHP 9mm

He is using his P99 earlier on in the same scene(s), so I am guessing he runs out of ammunition (nice if he does - realistic!) and has to take a pistol from a guard in the Embassy perhapse.

You can also see Mollaka carrying a pistol in some photos, so he may take it from him.

That is a Browning, but not the one from License Renewed because that was the classic Browning 9mm which was modeled after the old Colt 32 acp and 380acp caliber pistols and those were hammerless.

Yeah, it's a Browning M1935, otherwise known as a Hi-Power. It's a great pistol and yes, the SAS still use them. So do the Canadian forces. It's a little different from the M1911a1 in the fact that it doesn't use the Browning swinging lock barrel as in the Colt. And the original model used a staggered magazine of 13 parabellum rounds. AND....the Wehrmacht used them in small numbers during the Second World War when they captured some stocks of them. That right there should speak as a testament to the M1935's legend.

It's a single action automatic which tends not to be used too often these days, but it has the advantage of a short trigger pull which means once loaded, the user can pop off those 13 rounds VERY quickly.

They say the only criticism of it is the hammer's tendancy to bite the hand of the user when firing. But then again, the PPK does that too!

Cheers,

Adam

I wonder if that's actually the gun he'll be issued, or if circumstance provided him with the piece. Did we ever establish what gun he's seen holding in the promo shot with the tux? Is that a P99?

I dunno. Nothing beats the PPK. Anything else just looks like he's borrowing someone else's. Bond had a PPK, Callahan had a .44 Magnum, Riggs had a 9mm Beretta...just part of the character.

Yes, in all the official promotional pics (even the ones from this Madagascar chase) he's holding the P99. Yet in all the Madagascar on set footage he's holding this Browning. But as suggested above, it could be that he takes it off the bad guy.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Craig use a different gun. I really hate the P99 for some reason.

I don't like the P99 either. I've had the chance to shoot one and it's just...bleh, I dunno...I can't explain it. The PPK has always been Bond's weapon, but these days I can see him wanting to pack more of a punch, the downside to the PPK is that it does bite you hand (like someone else mentioned) especially once you have run out of rounds, and the 7.65mm round isn't very common/effective.

I wouldn't mind seeing Bond go to a Colt or a Browning, and if he wanted something that really hit, but was also concealable, then S&W has their Chiefs Special, which you can get in higher calibers...or even their .40 and .45 Tacticals.

I'd say the gun in that shot is a Colt 1911 like the one Bond stole from electra's body guard in the finale of The World is Not Enough. although it could well be the Browning Hi-Power 9mm as mentioned above. best guess is that he comes about the gun in a similar way also, probably as Flash1087 says, taking it from a dead bad guy or an embassy guard was also mentioned. but the rest of the publicity has proven bond's weapon of choice for this movie will remain the P99.

I've put better than a 1000 rounds through a P-99, and while a fine combat weapon in all respects, it's just too damn bulky.

The beauty of the Browning HP is that it packs 13 rounds, has a universal acceptance of all known 9mm ammo, a wide ejection port and retractor to fling the brass clear and (while being a single action) the short pull makes it as quick and as deadly as a double action auto. Also, the "bites the hand" bit (true of the PPK as well) can be avoided with diligent practice and a proper grip and stance. I'd trust my life to either the HP or PPK without a second thought...excluding my target that is.

I've used and carried my HP for years and it's still a slim, controlable weapon. Perfect for a former SAS man....If that's to be believed from what we've gathered thus far.

Yeah, it is a very bulky weapon that I can't imagine Bond concealing underneath a jacket. But you know I have heard from folks that the PPK jams quite often, the newer PPK/S doesn't have this problem. Now I haven't experienced it, cause I dont go shooting ALL that much, but its just something I heard...and I would suspect Bond would want a more reliable weapon.

Bond has a .45 1911 in the TWINE's PTS that he takes off one of the goons after revealing his P-99's "hidden assets". Look closely. It's a .45 auto.

But Benson says in the novelisation that is a Browning Hi-Power... at least in the Spanish Translation.

Just because it's in the novelization doesnt mean it is in the movie.

Nice piece SA007 - Have you had the trigger reworked?

Someday, some way, we really should get on the range together.

Can't go wrong with a good HP though.

Oooooooo....

I don't much care for the title of "gun nut".

Truly, I'm not offended, but all these threads that start out discussing guns or Bond's guns seem to degenerate into such alligations against those of us that have served, trained or simply enjoyed shooting as a sport. Not hunting, not walls filled with guns, just being able to place some bullets in a specified pattern on a paper target.

I'm knowledgeable on the topic and experienced, and if you've ever been 21 at three in the morning walking around the docks of San Pedro wearing a rent-a-cop uniform with a flashlight, a piece of iron on your hip is reassuring.

Besides, guns are a part of Bond - if Craig doesn't like them in real-life, it's his choice, but as an actor - it's merely a prop to be utilized - and done safely under professional supervision.

Hey, we're Bond nuts in the eyes of many, but your choices - as a fan, as a man - are your own.

Sorry to rant, but it irks me from time to time.

Could I drop the hammer on someone with myself or family or loved ones being threatened in a similar fashion?

Absolutely. No second thought or a nano-second of hesitation. Could I live with it? Ask me after it happens.

That's me. I enjoy firearms. Again, my choice.

So.....

Craig's utilizing a Browning HP of some sort in the still Zencat provided and I believe it to be a pistol picked up along the way - Not a standard issue, but if the reboot applies an SAS history, I suspect that would be his weapon of choice. Still wouldn't mind the PPK making it's appearance as a light/casual carry for our newly minted 007 as it were.

Bryce, I think I am going to shoot in the Single Stack Classic this year. You should go.

The HP in the pic has had the following modifications:

-Heinie slant pro sights with gold line front sight
**the step at the back of the rear sight removed (underside) and the rear of the sight wrapped to the slide contour, re-serrated then serrate the back of the slide. All at @40lpi. The sight blends in with the contours or the slides back-end.

-Trigger travel reduction modification

-Trigger job with C&S type II hammer and C&S sear

-Remove magazine disconnect

-Custom made extended thumb safety for Hi-power (right side. Remove left pad and trim shaft)

-Reliability Tune

-Built-up beavertail

-High cut front strap

-Stipple front strap

-Stipple back strap

-Flatten and serrate top of slide @ 40lpi

-Bevel magazine well

-Tighten frame and slide

-re-crown barrel (gun is fitted with BarSto barrel)

-remove hump in feed ramp

-Straighten up lines on frame and slide

-Satin matte bead blast & blue/polish slide flats

-Silver inlaid makers mark
