Don't worry, it's only a hundred miles back to Earth.

My girlfriend and I have been watching the Bond films in order, and our most recent viewing was of Moonraker. We got to the scene where Jaws releases the docking clamps so Bond and Dr. Goodhead can escape the station and my girlfriend turns to me and says: "Their going to die." Just then onscreen, Roger Moore seemingly turns to the camera and says "They'll be ok, it's only a hundred miles to Earth."

Now, I always took the line to be silly, but it wasnt until I was watching it with her that I realized it's basically thrown in there to reassure the audience (mostly made up of kids, presumably) that Jaws and his girlfriend will be ok. It's funny how you notice new things when watching a movie through the eyes of someone who's never seen it before.

Incidentally, my girlfriend feels Moonraker was very very silly (not bad though).

Yep, that's why it's there. That Cubby knew what he was doing.

It's great fun. Love The Raker.

Yeah, that's one of the things I love about the series is the little things like that. Having the widescreen DVDs and videos has helped with that a lot.

and don't forget we know that Col. Scott rescues them, some how...

the NASA tech at the end says: "Col. Scott reports picking up two survivours, a tall man and a short blonde woman."

Roger is the king of the fourth wall aside, after talking directly to the audience in the b/w seasons of The Saint.

yes, that was my first thought when i started reading this, as well. how they survived, we may never kneou - it's amazing they didn't beurn up in the atmosphere - but i wouldn't be surprised if they at least receiv-ed a sharp beump on the head! :D

i always lehked the idea that they seurviv-ed at the end of the steoury, but i'm glad they haven't been brought behk for any meour of the films. enough was enough, you kneou.

That's the whole point of Jaws isn't it - he always survives.

Yep, if going through a building in a runaway cable doesn't kill the guy a little thing like re-entering the atmosphere won't do it either.

Before sitting down to watch The Spy Who Loved Me with my girlfriend this past weekend, she told me that Moonraker is the only Roger Moore 007 movie she does not like.

Yeah that line obviously was to reassure the audience BUT I don't think that was a direct fourth wall talk like Roger did in The Saint. It was still in character and fully within the movie.

It was easy for them to survive. Jaws just put Dolly on his back, flapped his arms and aimed for the nearest giant tent.

And of course, it is/was only about 100 miles to earth. Science fact not fiction, as the byline went in '79.

Not sure they would have survived the atmosphere though - all that jargon about correct angles of descent. And anyway, who's to say they would even be going in the direction of earth out there. There isn't any gravity to help out and all those ejected from the station previously all seemed to go in directions other than to earth.

I'm sure in this case, the only thing to survive was his jaws. ha ha.
