Don't worry, it's only a hundred miles back to Earth.

Now, I always took the line to be silly, but it wasnt until I was watching it with her that I realized it's basically thrown in there to reassure the audience (mostly made up of kids, presumably) that Jaws and his girlfriend will be ok. It's funny how you notice new things when watching a movie through the eyes of someone who's never seen it before.
Incidentally, my girlfriend feels Moonraker was very very silly (not bad though).

Yep, that's why it's there. That Cubby knew what he was doing. My girlfriend and I have been watching the Bond films in order, and our most recent viewing was of Moonraker. We got to the scene where Jaws releases the docking clamps so Bond and Dr. Goodhead can escape the station and my girlfriend turns to me and says: "Their going to die." Just then onscreen, Roger Moore seemingly turns to the camera and says "They'll be ok, it's only a hundred miles to Earth."

Yeah, that's one of the things I love about the series is the little things like that. Having the widescreen DVDs and videos has helped with that a lot. It's funny how you notice new things when watching a movie through the eyes of someone who's never seen it before.

Scott rescues them, some how...

Before sitting down to watch The Spy Who Loved Me with my girlfriend this past weekend, she told me that Moonraker is the only Roger Moore 007 movie she does not like.

Yeah that line obviously was to reassure the audience BUT I don't think that was a direct fourth wall talk like Roger did in The Saint. It was still in character and fully within the movie.

It was easy for them to survive. Jaws just put Dolly on his back, flapped his arms and aimed for the nearest giant tent.

Of course--Isn't that how everyone does it?

And of course, it is/was only about 100 miles to earth. Science fact not fiction, as the byline went in '79.
Not sure they would have survived the atmosphere though - all that jargon about correct angles of descent. And anyway, who's to say they would even be going in the direction of earth out there. There isn't any gravity to help out and all those ejected from the station previously all seemed to go in directions other than to earth.
I'm sure in this case, the only thing to survive was his jaws. ha ha.
