I briefly skimmed one of the script reviews the other day and it made mention of Bond being recruited straight out of the SAS? I'd heard something similar in a magazine shortly before this but put it down to bad journalism. Wasn't Bond recruited straight out of the Navy?

This is really bugging me - will this mean that he'll no longer be Commander Bond?

The Navy was just a cover for his activities.

He could be recruited from the Navy into the SAS.

Why post this in the spoiler forum, when you reveal everything in the title?

The SAS-thing will probably make him more believable as a harder Bourne type of character.

I'd assumed there was a reference to an image Bond training with the SAS in the opening montage, which the Latino Review had misinterpreted as meaning Bond was a former SAS officer. Didn't sound like there was any actual dialogue suggesting he'd been an officer in the SAS rather than the Navy.

I believe the IGN report used the words "straight out of the SAS".

It doesn't matter much to me, as previously stated he could've been recruited into the SAS after the Navy.

I was just reading up on some of the British special forces because my knowledge in that area isn't too large and from what I've read Bond definatly would end up in the SAS if he was written today. Here's how wikipedia describes their duties...

* Gathering intelligence behind enemy lines.
* Destroying targets far behind enemy lines.
* Protecting senior British dignitaries.
* Executing CRW operations to assist police units such as SO19.
* Operating without official British Government involvement.
* Training special forces of other nationalities.
* Performing counter-terrorism operations at home and abroad

That's good enough for me, certainly sounds like stuff he'll be doing in this film. It also states that you must have experience in the British armed forces, which can be the Navy. I don't see any problems here.

I concur with Andrew, when watching a documentary on the SAS recently, the unit are recruited from the armed forces (RAF, Army, Marines and Navy). They never refer to themselves as SAS troops but still Naval Commander etc

Thanks guys I think you've pretty much cleared up my confusion. And I agree that the SAS background does make more sense for a contemporary setting.
