Arnold climbing out of the frozen lake and shedding his wetsuit for a tux? That's borrowing a Bond scene, not an inspiration of one.

His drysuit, indeed... Or he would be dressed in a wet tux ;-)

Great fun

I happened to be at the peak of my Ah-nuld fandom when the movie was released. I still enjoy it every time I see it.

Ah-nuld was such a formitable secret agent...man. To be honest, some of this DanBond stuff in 'Casino Royale' reminded me from Ah-nuld and 'True Lies'.

They both could beat a bunch chasing dobermans  I hope Dan does that too. Not that I encourage any violence against the animals... :cooltongue:

I remember thoroughly enjoying it when it was first(ish) shown on BBC1, but when I bought it on DVD about a year ago I found it protracted, rarely exciting or suspenseful and tediously unfunny. And what the heck was up with that Bill Paxton line? You know which one I'm talking about. Give me "Raw Deal" or "Commando" any day!

Great movie. It did a great job of blending good action and comedy. Most films have a hard time of doing that well. Tom Arnold is great, as is Bill Paxton.

I haven't seen this movie in a while...so can anyone remind me what other kind of Bond-ish stuff Arnold does in this movie?

I would support the production of this DVD, or the production of a True Lies 2, just so I can see some more of the grown up Eliza Dushku, who is always nice to look at.

In the absense of Bond in the early 90s it great fun.

IMO, where it succeeds where Bond would fail - in most cases - is Arnie's very physical, action man portrayal. Which Bond actor could have played a part so big and macho and convincingly action packed - early Sean, Laz and thats it? And yet that essential toughness is very Flemingesque and Arnie carries it offer better than most Bond actors. He has a "walk through walls" coolness.

Where it fails where Bond would SUCCEED is the attempt to make Arnie appear romantic and sophisticated - as in the castle tango sequences and those with Tia Carrera. He ain't a handsome man and seems uncomfortable trying to convey it.

Oh yes, and that brat of a daughter! Can't imagine Bond putting up with her.

"Walk through walls coolness"...hehe...obviously that post was made before he saw Casino Royale

Agreed. I just watched this movie the other day and it's definitely one of the funnest movies I've ever seen. It's got the look of "Goldeneye" with the spirit of a Moore film and the coolness of "Goldfinger."

Definately a fun flick with Arnold at his best, but I find the islamic villains a bit boring (good villains is important for me).

The bathroom scene really reminds of the one in Casino Royale, and I think the film also inspired the bridge sequence in MI:3.

The wetsuit/tux sequence at the beginning was an homage to <!-- CBN - FILM TAG BEGIN gf --><a target='_blank' href='http://www.commanderbond.net/index.cgi?action=Category&CID=96'><b class='film'>Goldfinger</b></a><!-- CBN - FILM TAG END -->.

WOW, REALLY? :(

National Treasure 1 had the jump suit to tux mix. Nic Cage also Bond fan.

YES, REALLY.

What I meant to add, before I was engulfed in a temporary power outage was does anyone else know who copied that same sequence in a movie? I'm sure there was at least one more film to do that.

I'll be brutally honest.

I saw this with my then fiancee' on opening day (a fine Friday evening as I recall...with a huge line up, no less) and it was a fun ride and a nice thumbs up.

So were GoldenEye, Die Another Day, et al (on opening day).

That's about as generous I can get about that movie.

I saw it again on tv the other night and I thought it was a joke. Arnold cant act and his sidekick (the guy who was married to rosanne barr at the time) makes a mockery of the intelligence sercives and is more cringe worthy than anything Eon has EVER served up.

If you compare it to the best of Bond, True Lies is horrible and horribly dated.

How's that for brutal honesty?

And, yes, Cage is obviously a James Bond fan as he blatently offers the girl at the counter his (Rolex) "Submariner" as temporary collateral.

Don't know how you can say the film has dated cos it still looks fresh to me. Especially the action scenes. Watching it on a good sound system makes a big difference.

I have a big screen and digital surround. No amount of sound will enable Arnold to act and wipe away all the embarrasing cringe elements.

T2...now THAT is a movie!

A rare instance where the sequel is better than the original. It never gets old. The third was alright, but nothing standout about it.

In T2 Arnold is not expected to act in any other fashion other than a robot...and Cameron does not need any other type of performance from Arnold.

It's a pure balls-to-the-wall, heart-thumping action fest. My opening night memories of T2 remain fond. I could hardly wait to go see it again...whereas on True Lies it was "ok...next!"

Thought I like T2, some things in it are really cringe worthy, the fact that the T is not allowed to kill, the kid and his relationship to him, Terminator smiling, "Trust Me" come on... they made a joke of T, it's all messy, whereas in True Lies, Cameron nailed the family motif perfectly.

Two words; Club Dread

(Yes I'm aware I'm in a serious minority with that film)

I agree with some of Stamper's criticisms of T2, it's a good film but it's technical qualities seem to have overshadowed it's (IMO) clumsy narrative. And I feel the first holds up better.

Yes, you may, and you are almost right. The only other exception I can think of is Twister. Wait, nevermind, You're right. It was the only good Bill Paxton casting idea movie. Hopefully that makes as much sense to all of you as it did in my head.

Still love it, wishing only that someone other than Arnie had been in it. Having said that, I'll take another underrated film over it any old day of the week: Shane Black's awesome The Long Kiss Goodnight!!!

When Arnie first did this movie were not used to seeing him like this. The dance scene was awkward but having now being exposed to more sensitive action heroes this movie makes a lot of sense to me. The prouction values(Peter Lamont am suprised he did a good job since Aliens and FYEO), the action, the humour still work.
When I saw GE for the first time I wondered how safe the movie looked. The BBC did a survey on GE upon release and most people compared it to Die Hard 2 or True Lies and said the latter two were better. Both these films to date are action staples even though they might have some cringe worthy moments.

It's an enjoyable enough film but not one I'm ever likely to add to my DVD collection. The middle portion always dragged far too much for me.

The idea I always thought would work well in a Bond film was that of the secret agent taking part in an upper class dance five minutes before sneaking up to the master bedroom (or wherever) to do some spy work.

Actually, he does the dance AFTER the spywork, and before blowing up the whole place and all the bad guys while drifting in snow using his back as skis ! (and knocking out two dogs at the same time) ! Brosnan Bond was never this cool !
