"It would be greatly in the interests of this country and of the other nations of the North American Treaty Organization that this powerful Soviet agent should be ridiculed and destroyed, that his communist trade union should be bankrupted and brought into disrepute.

This isn't relevant today.

Yes.. God forbid they update the script.

I'm frankly appalled so many people are passing judgment on the story for a film they don't really know anything about. "This story isn't relevant, it has so many plot holes" - "Have you read the screenplay?" - "Well... uhhh... uhh.. no." Hell even the terrorist information that has been rumored hasn't even been confirmed. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here...

Agreed. The final third of the book could be played in the modern world with very little tweaking. The first two thirds could be adapted to fit the modern world by any experienced screenwriter. That leaves no problem - and no need for a reboot, either.

In the novel Le Chiffre lost millions of francs that belonged to a commie group. Millions of francs was a lot of money in those days to Russians.

So what's the figure going to be now? Poker Tournaments go up to a million dollars. That's a pitance to organised criminals and terrorists today who have multi billion dollar black markets. Are Bond and Le Chiffre or whatever the new villains name is going to be play baccarat or poker for a billion dollars? That is about as realistic or gritty whatever as Bond flying in an invisible plane like Wonder Woman.

If it a modern terrorist story it doesnt make sense either. Muslim fundamentalists aren't allowed to gamble.

Why don't they just get the casino to ban Le Chiffre as a commie or terrorist sympathizer or get some guys to mug Le Chiffre end of story? The story is not believable in the modern world without the the eastern bloc.

I hate pissing so many people off, but here goes. I have not read the script. I have not seen one reel of film as they have not even started filming yet. From what I DO know of the movie, it does not sound too good. Why is it not ok for me to voice this opinion?

By the same token, why is it ok for many of you to say that Daniel Craig is going to be outstanding as James Bond, when no one has even seen the guy do one scene as Bond yet?

Do you really hate it? Hmm.

In answer to the other question, because they want to be optimistic. It's Christmas.

Oh, Jim, Jim, Jim....

Anyway, I wonder if the guy who played Peter Franks could come back and do a cameo in Casino Royale, maybe playing Bond's "brudda" again.

Oh yeah that sounds real and gritty (Campbell quote).

I think Campbell said it would be gritti*er* and *more* realistic. It's still a Bond film.

The best poker players in the world waste their time entering the WPT to play for a million dollars when all they had to do is go to play POKER with a secret agent, a terrorist and a few old saps in a casino in France, Bahamas or Romania wherever its going to be. Sorry to say this but an invisible Aston Martin is more likely to happen in reality.

But it's not reality. It's a Bond film. The plot of the novel is also highly implausible - it's still grittier and more realistic than, say, LIVE AND LET DIE or DR NO.

Solari is a dumb henchman character unlike the cold and easy to underestimate nameless ones in the book. I am very very disappointed already.

How do you know Solari will be a dumb henchman? What are you basing that on? How do you know he won't be a very clever henchman? How do you know he'll be in at all - it's a tabloid story. It's like debating Terence Stamp's qualities in AQUATOR.

Oddjob was named in the book, as was Red Grant.

Apart from that, you were right on the mark.

I get the feeling that Mr. Franks just doesn't like anything about Casino Royale and will say anything no matter how pointless it sounds. First off he keeps saying that the idea of the poker game is unrealistic, which is false. The sums of money shown on WPT and such are nothing compared to what could be wagered in private games among high rollers which we never hear about because they take place behind closed doors. Also he has mentioned that any amount from a poker game would be unrealistic because these terrorist groups have billions at their disposal which is also besides the point. It doesn't matter if Le Chiffre had to win back a billion dollars or a thousand the fact is he used money thats not even his in a scheme to enrich himself and failed. He is supposed to be a trusted agent and if his trechery is exposed no matter the amount of money in question, he would be assassinated. In real life people have lost there lives for less.
