This may be one of the most absurd things ever posted here on CBn (or maybe not) but I was watching Alfred Hitchcock's SUSPICION the other day and for whatever reason Cary Grant reminded me a lot of George Lazenby. Maybe I'm completely bonkers, but the way Grant spoke, acted and even looked reminded me of George Lazenby (in SUSPICION, anyway. I haven't watched any other Cary Grant films for a while). Cary Grant and George Lazenby don't look a lot alike, but if you compare photos of the two of them I think they could at least pass as brothers. Is George Lazenby the closet to Cary Grant as Bond we ever got? I think so.

Am I nuts? Does anyone else see this?

You're right, Macca 007....

....it is one of the most absurd posts and you are nuts.

Come on. Just because George is one of your mates (along with Roger) and they know who you are  , do you really think that the Laz has something of the Grant about him?

Having said that, because it's you and you yourself are like a cross between Cary Grant and Daniel Wilde, I will watch Suspicion again and think of your theory.

And I'll be happy to eat my words!

Above is one of the shots featuring Grant from the film. Having not watched the very enjoyable Suspicion in a while, I can't be quite sure. I'll definitely look for it next time I do though.

Actually Laz had a Grantesque look to him. Square jaw, cleft chin, shape of head. He also had a similar tone to his voice. Grant aged much better although nobody aged like Mr. grant except mabey God.

You're right. It was almost freakish. The only thing that changed was his hair color and the addition of those big black, thick-framed glasses. Everything else seemed to remain the same.

In North by Northwest Grant does have a Lazenby hair cut. And does actaully sound like him aswell.

Well, it is well known that Laz was described as something between Grant and Jack Palance, which, was the perfect discription for him. BTW, Laz didn't age badly, he could still be Bond...

Give or take a couple of decades...

On the question, I do agree there is more than a passing resemblance between Cary Grant and George Lazenby - it is probably the chin that does it. Moreover, I do also think that Lazenby does exhibit some of Grant's mannerisms, although the point could be exaggerated.

I for one think it is tragic that Laz didnt do more bonds. I think he was good in OHMSS and would have developed into a great Bond if he had been better advised.

Yeah, its definately there - chin, build, hair colour, unusual voice (though they aren't identical, each speaks so uniquely that NO ONE could pinpoint where they came from really), Laz as Bond dresses very formally as per CG, tan...

Unfortunately, CG was perhaps a tad sharper with his career decisions than Laz... I mean, CG waited until he was too old to act the leading man before taking the decision to end his career.

Yes, I've also often thought Laz is like Grant in his look and mannerisms. The word that came to mind is that he is like Grant in his 'geniality'. I looked up the meaning of that word in the dictionary and it means....."Of or relating to the chin". I think it significant others mentioned this physical comparison between Lazenby and Grant. I've always thought of Laz as having a 'warmth' about him and I think Cary Grant had that same quality. Funny how we attribute physical attributes to people. Maybe it's all in the chin, lol.

One should be able to dismiss your post as bonkers. And yet.... I sort of know what you mean. To make comparisons between Grant and Lazenby will be anathema to many, but what they forget is that our best record of Lazenby as a leading man is OHMSS when he was very raw. And if you ever get to see Grant's first film - Singapore Sue - he was much, much worse!

I'm of the opinion that George Lazenby could have blossomed not only into a great James Bond, but also a very good leading man. Alas, it wasn't to be.

I would certainly agree that Lazenby has never been paid a higher compliment ever.

p.s. And Cary Grant has never been more slammed (haha, just kidding of course)

He might have a slight physical similarity, not nothing like Grant's mannerisms.

I can see the similarity between Cary Grant and George Lazenby. The latter did not have the acting chops of the former, who could go from light comedy to playing a near psychotic part in the 1946 movie, "Notorious." All James Bond actors, except Pierce Brosnan, had the hard chiseled look that was more reminiscent of Grant, than Fleming's description of Bond, who looked like any bored civil servant on his way to work, as found in "Moonraker." However, there was some of the same bantering quality in the dialogue with the heroine. Additionally, Grant never seemed to lose his acrobat physique, and Lazenby had the physique of a male model, making him the most muscular James Bond yet. The early scenes on the beach had Lazenby dressed in the open white shirt, and black slacks like Grant wore at the conclusion of the 1959 movie "North By Northwest," while he was breaking into the villain's cliffside mansion.
