I can't see Suchet as M. Even without the tache he looks too continental. He might make a good LC though.
Ben Kingsley springs to mind (sorry if these suggestions have been done elsewhere, I'm new so be gentle). He does a good villain but doesn't fit the fat, slobbery description of the book.
I suggested Phillips Seymour Hoffman once but got laughed out of the room.
