This might sound like a silly question but it isn't when you think about it. Fleming and the films before Brosnan called it the BRITISH SECRET SERVICE. Gardner called it the SECRET INTELLIGENCE SERVICE (SIS). Benson calls it both SIS and MI6. The Brosnan Bond's call it MI6...oh...and by the way...M in the DR NO movie called it MI7 !......If you have an opinion, drop a line here. Personally, I reckon MI6 sounds the best but I don't know if it is the correct name or not.

All this talk of the various MI's has reminded me of a vague plot idea I had. Essentially it would revolve around various power games within the British intelligence community, eventually leading Bond to uncovering the UK equivalent of Area 51, a site so secret not even M knows of it. It would be policed by a shadowy organisation working within and above MI6. Now I was trying to come up with a good ominous-sounding name for the site, which would also be the title of the film, but instead I think I'll go for the name of the organisation, how about "MI-ZERO"?

Those similarities do exist! I wonder if they did get the idea from Bond??

If just read the MI-5 history, The makers from Men In Black got the 'k' and 'j' from that whole 'K' and 'C'.

(And of course Bonds 'M' and 'Q')

Thta is a great plot "R" - it sounds very familiar to the X-Files, but I don't think anyone has ever thought about the UK equivalent to Area 51!

Blue Eyes, I just knew someone was going to say that! ;-)
Maybe it should be called MI007!
There, I said it. :-P

I'd say MI7 is too secret for a net site. Plus I don't think their role has ever been admitted.

Acronymfinder.com lists MI5 as the equivalent to the FBI (internal security), and MI6 to CIA (external security).
MI7 shows not results.

I believe the proper reference within the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) is MI-6 (Military Intelligence, Division 6 ie. foreign intelligence). So both MI-6 and SIS are correct.

I believe that the MI's go up to 22, but if we ever found out what they were, or did, we'd be taken for a van ride to some nice, quiet, out-of-way spot....

Something like that R! Into a boggy marsh somewhere. Silence .22 and hey presto, you're not found for about 50 years!

I wonder if there is a MI.com, or similar, that can tell us the answer.
The Internet can tell us how to make a nuclear bomb, so why not!

Strangely enough, something along those lines can be done! Check out http://www.mi5.gov.uk. Don't forget to click 'Job Vancancies', it's where I found my job :)

There is no MI6 web site, so don't bother looking :)

Check out http://www.mi5.gov.uk/briefhis.htm for a history of MI5. Very interesting talking about K and C and all that

Blue Eyes, thanks for the info mate. Very interesting.
The brief history certainly does not give away any secrets, but I wonder if the work done by "C" help to kick off MI6?

Well, if

MI5 = Internal Security
MI6 = External Security

what would MI7 be?

MI7 = Universal Security (UFO's etc)?

I wonder if I'm right :) I may see you again, however, if I'm not online for the next week, better start asking questions :)

If the MI's go up to 22, what could they all be for?

Well they could be more specific I guess. Like perhaps Illegal Immagrants and stuff. Dealing with particulars rather than just all of the UK.

BTW Dave some guy in a black suit asked for your address, I hope you don't mind :)

He's already visited me. Luckily, I had my Walther with me and managed to get rid of him in time before he scratched the Aston :)
