I've just been reading Gary Giblin's "James Bond's London" and come across this paragraph about the history of Eon Productions. I must say that Gary pointed it out to me, so thanks Gary.

Anyway. For starters. It's Eon and not EON. Yes even I was confused about that.

Onto what it stands for... nothing. Unless you want to read into it.

...From Saltzman's solicitors ... the pair aquired Eon Productions Ltd, a shelf company whose name did not stand for "Everything Or Nothing", as some writers would later claim

Gary goes on to explain exactly what a shelf company is. Basically a big solicitors office (and sometimes accountant offices too) will own a number of companies. All they do with them is simply shelf them. Anotherwords, they simply register the companies name and pay the annual registration fee. They do nothing with the company.

When a client comes along in need of a registered company quickly (registration can take sometime) the client simply buys it off their solicitor.

Hence, Eon Productions was bought as a pre-existing company name. And therefore, does not stand for Everything Or Nothing.

No offense Blue Eyes. But when I read the subject header, I thought you mean EON productions was dead. :)

I thought the same Jimmy. lol :)

A great piece of history though, I've always used EON instead of Eon.

Finally, a difinitive answer. Assuming Cubby and Harry were given a choice, I wonder what other names were available to choose from?

There goes one possible movie title out the window.:)

Eon was a shelf company, but it did stand for Everything Or Nothing, as Saltzman stated many times, and if I recall, Cubby did aswell. Saltzman though of it when he was deciding the budget for Dr. No.

That's one of the great things about "James Bond's London". It's not just a travel guide. Gary has included so many facts and so much trivia it makes the book a must read. There aren't many places where one can look up such details as the one I included above.

Gary has a lot of knowledge and has put in a lot of research time for the book, and it shows!
