I've read Licence renewed and For Special Services, and now I'm getting hold of the rest of the Gardner books at used bookstores, I can't find them all at the moment so I'm just taking whatever I can get. Do they have to be read in order, like say OHMSS-YOLT or are they all just standalone books?
Do the Gardner books have to be read in order?

Strongly recommend you read: Licence Renewed, For Special Services, Icebreaker, Role Of Honour, and Nobody Lives Forever in that order.
As well as Never Send Flowers, SeaFire, and Cold in that order.

Agree with Qwerty but to be on the safe side, read them in publication order.

Naturally, publication is almost always best. You can get alot of them very cheap off eBay.

Yes I will turn to ebay if I can't get them all from used bookstores. Right now though I have The Man from Barbarossa, which I see from other threads is somewhat 'different'. Is this one safe to read or does it have a lot of continuity with previous books?

Not too much compared to some of the others as far as I can remember.

When your just starting out reading Bond, you read whatever you can get your hands on. I know I did, then once I had all the Flemings, I re-read them in order and enjoyed them even more. Then Gardener picked up the pen and I've been keeping up ever since. The last six of the Benson's were really fun though.
One of my favorite reads was flying to London with my copy of "No Deals Mr. Bond" in 1st class. It just fit the trip and mood.
