On July 6, 2005, the CommanderBond.net Forums hit yet another all time high of 159 members on at one time!

Why yesterday, amongst this somewhat quiet time in the Bond world is a mystery, but it goes to show the popularity of the #1 James Bond site in the world! :)

Weird really- you'd think Bond would have gallons of fans. I wonder why it doesn't appeal as much as other series? For instance, the Dr Who board I'm on at the moment (at 2pm on a Wednesday) has 244 members online (I see the most ever is 1,320), which seems odd for a TV series with a largely British fanbase and which isn't even on at the moment. Considering something like every third person in the world has seen a Bond film (or whatever that incredible fact is), you'd think they'd be more fans, wouldn't you? Why would that be- is it just a sci-fi thing?

Bond fandom cannot be compared to any other franchise, IMHO.

Licensees have made the mistake of thinking that it can be like Star Wars, Star Trek, or Doctor Who - where you slap a picture of Yoda, the Enterprise, or the Tardis on something - and the fans will buy it.

Certainly not for Star Wars, but I would venture to say that casual Bond fandom is larger than Trek or Who...but both of their hardcore fandoms are bigger than Bond's hardcore fandom.

Once again we get into Jim's question of long ago - how to do you measure the baseline Bond fan?

I know that the subscription base of 007 magazine can hover between 2000-4000 - depending on the subscription cycle and where the films are in the production cycle.

But you have plenty that also buy the magazine on the newstand and at comic shops. And then you have plenty of people who are into Bond but don't want to read a fan magazine.

So on this Doctor Who board - are their constant arguments over who the best Doctor is?

Science fiction fans are just more prone to mess about on the internet, I think. That probably explains the dearth of vibrant Bond fan communities.

Because Bond isn't science-fiction.

I thought I said that.

Unfortunately, we will never know what our true all time high is. We obviously hit it yesterday, but in order to keep the forums running, our excellent Quartermaster Greg had to such down everything that wasn't essential to the running of the site, including the feature that measure the current online membership. :)
