Well, if he was going back to the sixites for Bond, why didn't he just mention Adam West? There's your five and five. And don't say it's because West's Batman wasn't "serious"; he included Moore who's movies had Tarzan yells, slide whistles, lasers in space, clown outfits and ... worst of all... QUICHE! :)

Isn't it time to get over the AVTAK quiche-bashing? For goodness' sake, it's a freakin' pie -- and that "real men don't eat quiche" thing is so 20 years ago; anyone who read Bruce Feirstein's book realizes it's a metaphor, and a fairly funny one at that...

I was being sarcastic, hence the smiley face. Getting awfully worked up over quiche aren't you?

LOL, I didn't mean to sound as angry as I did. It's just that AVTAK is a really good Bond film in its own simple way and I often see this used as a reason to hate it.

And yes, I know that once you admit you like AVTAK, it's you up against the Bond fan universe, so I'd better get thicker skin :) .

:) Awwwwwww cmon, you guys Bond is great, but he's no where close to Batman's league. Batman in comic continuity is in his early thirties. He starts his training at college age. He travels the world learning from various masters in the martial arts and how to be a detective. Once he is trained,he hones these skills every day!!! He doesn't play baccarat, he doesn't relax between assignments. Only with the greatest frustration does he make a public appearance as Bruce. Every minute of his life he is consumed with fighting crime. When Bond was broken by the beating in Casino Royale, for awhile he was a shell of the man he was before. When Bats was broken by Bane, he fought his crusade from a wheel chair. The only thing that gives Bond the edge here is that he is willing to kill. If you reach waaaaaayyyyy back into the Batman's early days when Bob Kane was still in the mix, Batman carried a gun and did that as well. Batman would make mincemeat of Odd Job and Jaws on a physical level and mentally he's more then a match for Drax, Dr No or Goldfinger. Bond loves his job, but Batman is totally consumed by his crusade. He lives for it body and soul. He has trained himself to physical and mental perfection to wage his war on crime. I do think that Bond would be more fun to party with though. :)

Well, that's insane. "Batman's league" is the minors: comic books. Fighting oridinary crime. In one city. Ho-hum. Bond is far more intelligent, far more resourceful, far more successful in the ladies' department. I'm glad whatever you look for in a hero you find in a guy that wears tights and sharp poity ears on his head. But us grown-ups prefer the sophisticated gentleman spy -- James Bond.

Problem is that the cinematic versions of these two iconic characters have suffered a bit on an identity crisis in recent years.
Too caught up in the toys and tricked-out cars and not enough of the hard edge that made them both so distinctive in the first place. ''Begins'' has gone someway to stopping the rot with Batman, but it remains to be seen if Eon can (or even want to) do the same with 007.

Bond is actually nowhere near as intelligent as the great detective that Batman is - Batman dabbles in science as well. And I don't see, in any way, how Bond is any more resourceful (they about strike even on this, IMO). And to be honest, Batman has his share of the ladies as well.

And I'd argue that just because Batman fights people higher up on the food chain, it's no less of a struggle for Batman to face the rather intense and bizarre villains he deals with on a nightly basis. Besides, what Batman fights can hardly be called "ordinary crime" if you have any understanding of the character at all.

A very intelligent woman once told me never to define yourself by what you are not - or don't defend someone or something you like by denigrating something else. And please don't try and patronise others when you quite evidently have little/no conception of the character you are slagging off. We're all 'grown-ups'; some of us behave like it. :)

Like I say I enjoy both characters but they are very different and inhabit very different worlds. I therefore disagree with the whole premise of the article as they cannot really be compared. Both characters are highly resourceful - but in different ways. Both characters are usually professionally successful - in different ways. And in the works of fiction in which they appear they face radically different situations and enemies - as well as the characters themselves being wholly divergent.

As with Bond vs. Bourne etc it doesn't have to be one or the other. Why can't one like both and - if so - have a favourite?

You're completely right Lazenby. There are two shelves on my bookcase that are reserved for certain books, one for Bond and one for Batman. I love both characters. And they are comparable, both are orphans, both drive cool cars, use gadgets, and compensate use their wits and intellingence to solve crimes. They also routinly battle villians who are utterly insane. Of course, scratch the surface and they're nothing alike, but a casual reader might not notice. Thats why its easy to be a fan of both the dark knight and the white knight.
I couldnt begin to choose which one i like more, thats like picking a favourite bond movie, although with bats its a little easier. (theres only 6 i know of and three kinda make me sick).

BTW i love Hush, Loeb's a mastermind
