Did anyone else catch the three and a half hour spy drama "Frederick Forsyth's ICON" on the Hallmark channel. I caught the encore performance this past weekend and was mightily impressed. Apart from a miscast Patrick Swayze (who was merely okay) the rest of the cast from Michael York (playing the straight spymaster role this time) to Ben Cross. Patrick Bergin, Jeff Fahey and Joss Ackland did a great job.
My favorite moments - the movies "Q-scene," infiltration of the Russian villa and tha car/motorbike-chase through the Moscow streets.
" Iorder you!" -- excellent stuff

"Frederick Forsyth's Icon

Bottom line: The production easily holds our interest despite a plot that's not hard to predict.

Remarkable access to Russian settings adds much to this original miniseries based on the work of thriller writer Frederick Forsyth ("Day of the Jackal") and starring a solid cast led by Patrick Swayze.
The heroic characters are sympathetic, though the villains are a bit stock. The production easily holds our interest despite a plot that's not hard to predict.
Former CIA spy Jason Monk (Swayze) is persuaded to come out of retirement after 15 years and deal with the possible election of evil presidential contender Igor Komarov (Patrick Bergin). The disillusioned Jason also is given the chance to reunite with his daughter.
"Enlisted" by British ambassador Sir Nigel Irvine (Michael York), Jason is soon up to his neck in clandestine action. He meets Russian detective Sonia Astrova (Annika Peterson), and you just know they'll soon be working together to foil a nasty plot involving a vintage bioweapon.
Swayze proves a decent action hero, whose dance background and willingness to display vulnerability make him eminently watchable. The rest of the players give proper support.
The melodrama sometimes gets a bit too thick, but there's a sense of tension and forward momentum that should captivate.
