I am about a third of the way through the book and so far so good. Kind of a "grand plot" type of novel along the lines of "Goldfinger" however with a more plausible less over the top scenario. Impressed with the very strong characterisations. I have also found Domino less likeable so far and prefer her film counterpart as played by Claudine Auger, although this may change as i read on.

Your thoughts?

Much better than Goldfinger. There's something about this one that just makes it a Bond book that really puts you into the story. It feels like you take every step Bond does.

It's been a long time since I've read Thunderball (the pages are starting to turn yellow). Sped it through in a couple of days. It's very well-crafted, and the characters are intriging. Interesting how the Domino character is Italian. I forget, but what are her features in the novel?

I'm going to read this book as soon as I've finished reading "The Detonators" (one of 3 Matt Helm books I've yet to read).

Not quoting directly from the book word for word but she has:
dark brown eyes
small upturned nose
bridgitte bardot style hairdo (whatever that is) no mention of hair colour though.
light tan
beautiful breasts (yes its in the book)
of Italian parentage from the South Tyrol so there is probably German blood in her as well.

I read ALL the Flemings over 30 years ago Devin and virtually remember nothing about them as I've being reading them up to For Your Eyes Only recently. I honestly can't remeber any of Thunderball, which in a way is a good thing.

It's like reading it (and the others) for the first time all over again. Err...yeah. :)

Sounds like a great thing to me, getting the chance to be as if you're reading them again, but for the "first time". :)

I've just started reading Thunderball. Jolly good stuff, so far.

I have to admit that one of the aspects I enjoy in reading the Flemings again is coming across bits and pieces (and whole chunks, of course) of "stuff" that are recognisable in the movies. The "see you later, irrigator" in the book kind of explains why the "see you later....aligator" is in the movie.

Have you read all the Fleming's?

Hi,

No. I am reading them all in order for the first time except for CR and DN:

I read Casino Royale a few years back, haven't read it recently.
This year i started with LALD, then read through MR, DAF,FRWL, skipped DN as i read it last year, GF, FYEO and TB.
I will start on TSWLM around the start of August to coincide with the Blades Book Club.
Haven't read TSWLM, OHMSS, YOLT, TMWTGG and OP.

Thanks for the links to the paperback cover art sites. They were very informative.

Byron, try to read Thunderball, OHMSS and YOLT in that order. They form a sort of trilogy; OHMSS and YOLT have a real emotional impact if you care about the world's favourite superspy. Many people think it's a toss-up between the two as to which is Fleming's best book.

As for Thunderball - Felix Leiter's comment ("Authentic blonde!") is a prime example of Fleming having good, clean, dirty fun. :)
