I did the research for that map. And Cayeux-sur-Mer is fits exactly with Fleming

My sudden interest in this small french coast-town made me search the internet for some more pix. This are some that I found:

Can somebody PLEASE tell me what kind of car this is?

The casino today... not exactly the same elegance as the old one...

Royale is a fictional combination of Le Touquet and Deauville, with the accent heavily on the latter. The place is like a French Beverly Hills and the casino matches the description in the novel is key areas.

Deauville, for all intents and purposes IS Royale.

I believe John Cork did an article for GOLDENEYE magazine about the fictitious Casino Royale locations. I'm not at home right now so I don't have access to any more information, but I remember the article being pretty good.

Deauville is in the wrong location. Fleming tells us that Royale-les-Eaux is in Picardy just south of the mouth of the Somme. Deauville is in Normandy south of the Seinne. Cayeux-sur-Mer is in Picardy just south of the mouth of the Somme.

This is fascinating - one wonders if it's Cayeaux in the flesh but Deauville in the mind.

Or, for that matter, Prague.

Perhaps Fleming based some of the details of Royale-les-Eaux on the layout of the town or on some of it's buildings?

Great topic. I sincerely hope the filmmakers do use a location in France like the ones above in this film. It's looking like they're not, though. C'est la vie. I picture the town a bit like Deauville (not that I've been there).

The car in the picture is a Lagonda by the way. Sort of a cross between a Bentley and Aston Martin really in that W.O Bentley went on to design engines for Lagonda after selling his company to Rolls Royce. David Brown purchased Lagonda after buying Aston Martin, placed W.O Bentley's 2 litre in his car and the David Brown Aston Martin story began...

Royale-les-Eaux to my knowledge was based off the "Estoril Casino" in Estoril Portugal. Supposedly during World War II tons of secret agents would gather there since Portugal was neutral during the war.

It is the spirit of Deauville that Fleming takes, not it's geographical location.

No, the events of Casino Royale are based on events purported to have taken place in the Estoril Casino but Estoril itself was not the basis of the fictional location.

John Cork did indeed write an excellent piece on the subject matter (take the article along with you when/if you visit the place).

Having been to Deauville, Le Touquet and Estoril, I think that the place Fleming described is the spirit of Deauville.

I don't think Royale was based on any one place, but on the memories Fleming had of gambling at so many of those casinos over the years.
