You didn't exactly pick the best picture of Craig for that comparison. If you look at the Layer Cake trailer (the movie isn't in wide release here, so the trailer's all I've had to go on), there are several moments that look very Bondian. But to each his own.

Bond of The Week - August 2004

This guy was named on these very forums as a potential Bond of the week almost 10 months ago. What took the Daily Star so long?

Yup, I've always thought Connery loved himself. And that the rest of the world was against him.

i dont think he has the class for bond but after starring in straight to video actioners and the odd soft core romp i was stunned by how good he was in dead mans shoes...it had a great cast and the incomparable shane meadows directing with the always good paddy considine starring but the big surprise was stretch...he is outstanding and the movie is criminally underrated...i urge you all to rent it

From the "Spy" column by Celia Walden in today's Daily Telegraph (UK):

Bond contender gets heavyweight support

The exhaustive list of potential Bonds is bordering on the absurd. But until now, none of the hopefuls could lay claim to having the support of the granddaddy of all Bonds: Sir Sean Connery.

That accolade has been won by the former British boxing champion turned Hollywood actor, Gary Stretch.

"Gary had already had six callbacks to the MGM studios in Los Angeles when he bumped into Sean at a party recently," says my martini-guzzling mole.

"The two of them really hit it off and ended up spending the evening out on the town together. Sean was able to give Gary a few tips, and subsequently called producer Barbara Broccoli to tell her Gary was his favourite." Connery's intervention certainly seems to have helped. Merseyside-born Stretch - who has managed to retain his good looks despite having them frequently rearranged in the ring - is scheduled to meet Broccoli on Friday.

"It was actually between him and Pierce Brosnan last time round, but Pierce beat him to it. Gary'll be gutted if Brosnan scoops him again."

--------

Of course, this is the same column in which, back in February, Walden wrote:

I can exclusively reveal that the relatively unknown British actor Dominic West has made it to the final round of auditions for the legendary 007 role.

"It's down to two," says my highly placed source.

"Dominic went for a final audition in front of [producer] Barbara Broccoli two weeks ago. He's already made it through five auditions and several screen tests to get this far. Apparently he is Barbara's favourite."

West, 35, has been wooing audiences Stateside with his performance as a bent cop in top HBO show The Wire for the past three years, and has most recently starred alongside Julianne Moore in The Forgotten.

His agent has evidently been sworn to secrecy.

"We can't disclose anything at all on that subject," she says when I call about the Bond role.

"I wish I could tell you, but I'm just not allowed to say a thing."

Since Pierce Brosnan announced he would not be stepping into Bond's shoes again last July, there has been much speculation about who could fill those impeccably polished brogues. Names being heavily touted include Hugh Jackman, Dougray Scott and Clive Owen.

"Dougray seems to have given up the ghost and gone off on holiday," adds my source. "But Dominic is hanging around in London until he gets the call."

The Old Etonian West, at least, would bring a touch of genuine class to the part of the wise-cracking philanderer. He has a daughter with ex-girlfriend Polly Astor, granddaughter of Lord Astor.

Is the relationship between Connery and Barbara Broccoli really that good that he calls her up and tells her about his opinion? I thought that Connery and the Broccolis were on warring terms after DAF and especially after Never Say Never Again.

Pure tabloid garbage, if you ask me (even though the Torygraph isn't a tabloid).

The Stretch article is in today's paper. Yes, the article about West is from February, but then I made that clear.

No problem. :)

I expect that, in a few weeks, the same columnist will be claiming that her "martini-guzzling mole" has told her that Clive Owen will shortly be putting his signature on a contract for Bond, and that a few weeks after that her "highly placed source" will be insisting that Dean Gaffney is the surprise choice to take 007 back to his early years in the prequel that is CASINO ROYALE. :)

Judging by this and other pix in this site: http://garystretch.net/pics03.html and how he stacks up against the man himself, Gary Stretch is now formally my favorite for the role unseating my longtime favorite (still hard to say it) Hugh Jackman.

Are you saying that they both look good but neither one can act? I've never seen either one in a movie. I know Geoffrey Moore has the looks:

Don't know if either can act (I tend to doubt it, but I'm pretty cynical so...). But as to suitability:

Moore looks like a Maitre D or a Hotel Manager (5-star, of course).

Stretch looks like a thug. A polished thug, perhaps. But a thug nonetheless.

So neither = suitable (for different but equally powerful reasons).

Just my take. I've been wrong before, I'll be wrong again.....

:) ROTFL YES....definitely from Vulcan! Not that there's anything wrong with that. I like most Vulcans. But not for Bond.

A more poliite version of "thug" is "dangerous." You have just put your finger on Stretch's best qualification. The guy is Bond-handsome and looks like he can be very dangerous. Ala Connery. I'm getting really excited about this possibility. He was a good enough actor in "Alexander" too.

British boxer-turned-model-turned actor. Small part in ALEXANDER. Regularly in the tabloids. Has managed to pick up some good reviews for his acting, in fact: The Guardian called his performance in DEAD MAN'S SHOES a 'revelation', saying he was 'cool, hard, sinuously malevolent'. Could happen, though it seems like about the billionth tabloid story to say someone is about to be announced. Messrs Craig, Owen and several others have had very similar stories about them.

Actually if there's any truth to Connery's endorsement of Stretch, and if he really is impressed by him, it stands to reason that Connery will probably mentor Stretch in all things Bond. He'd be a great coach to give GS's mannerisms and personality the Bond flavor. :)

Implausible. The Telegraph article also quotes someone close to Stretch claiming that the role was between him and Brosnan 'last time round', presumably meaning 1994, when Stretch was 27 and hadn't even begun his acting career. The whole thing smacks of PR, and Stretch makes Adrian Paul look as vain as Jo Brand.

Can anyone get that Gary Stretch site to reveal the photos? My Norton Anti-Virus prevents them from being shown.

Someone on another Bond forum mentioned that his surname, Stretch, doesn't sound quite right for Bond, eg: 'Gary Stretch is James Bond in Casino Royale.' Maybe he should change his name to Gary LeMare or something just as odd/exotic/silly. :)
