I'm from Nottinghamshire, right in the middle of the UK, and I agree with you about the 1980s. Locally it's still hard to see how we've recovered, if at all. What I was getting at was the perception of excess wealth which the media still links with the mid 1980s - yuppies, de-regulated banking, all the trappings of the "greed is good" society Oliver Stone put over in the film "Wall Street". Or to borrow a line from a Bond film, the much derided (but not by me) DAD - Bond on Gustav Graves' rise to riches; "From nothing to everything in no time at all."
