I know there's a topic about the remake of Hitchcock's birds. But i have been meaning to open a thread on the hitchcock films my self. I was actually going to open it, but then i'd found out there was a thread about hitch's remake. which i thought might upset a few people. but then i decided that the other thread was about the remake and not actually about his other films, no doubt that we managed to discuss his other films. hope the Commanders don't mind. I have recently bought 9 hitchcock film's my self. they are as follows

Shadow Of A Doubt (1943, B+W)
Rope (1948, colour)
Rear Window (1954, colour)
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956, colour)
Vertigo (1958, colour)
Psycho (1960, B+W)
The Birds (1963, colour)
Marnie (1964, colour. with Sean Connery)
Frenzy (1972, colour)

Do you like Hitchcock and what films do you think are good and bad.

I find something worthwhile in all Hitchcock. Even "Family Plot", which is often derided. I've not seen all his earlier work, but I am always game to rent one I haven't seen.

My biggest disappointment was the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much, which just seemed surprisingly flat for Hitch (especially with the likes of Jimmy Stewart involved). Hard to pick a favorite. The Birds still chills after all these years. I love Tony Perkins in Psycho. I have a special fondness for Rope. Best of all may be Vertigo. And Frenzy is surprisingly grabby.

The Man Who Kwey Too Much, didn't really do alot for me either.

Vertigo I think his got to be one of his bests. The Hicthcock zoom was a smart and sophisticated effect to be done in 1957/58, where cgi didn't exist. i often wondered weather Vertigo would be a film that will be remade in the future, where the hitchcock zoom can be taken to another level, due to the availability of cgi and better technology. To me Rope is a film that is fantastic the first time you have ever seen it. whilst, the second time it isn't as suspense ful, becuse you knoiw that James Stewart is going to unravel the truth. Frenzy I thouroughly enjoyed. the humour was good.

Hitch is great.
I really like ROPE, which is an unusual film.
Vertigo is great, as is North By Northwest.

My favourite Hitchcock films are:

North By Northwest
Vertigo
Rear Window
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956 Remake)
Psycho
Marnie
The Birds
Shadow of a Doubt
To Catch a Thief

I've seen most of his work but prefer his later stuff to his earlier work. The Lodger is suprisingly effective though.

About the Vertigo zoom, it's a relatively easy effect to achieve and so is not as sophisticated as it appears. It simply combines a zoom in whilst moving the camera back.
As a point of interest, the stairwell it's performed on was a miniature model.

Love some of his films. Trying to track down all of them currently. Just need a few from the 20's and 30's, plus Lifeboat and The Paradine Case. Shame about those not being included in the recent set.

Good luck with that. His very early work is extremely hard to track down. Films like 'The Pleasure Garden', 'Juno and the Paycock', etc. I've not been able to find copies of them anywhere. Lifeboat's quite easy to find as there's a DVD of it I believe, same with the Paradine Case.

If you haven't already got it, may I recommend that you track down and purchase "HITCHCOCK by TRUFFAUT: The Definitive Study" and "HITCHCOCK'S FILMS REVISITED" by Robin Wood. These are two books that no Hitch fan should be without, especially the Francois Truffaut one.

Dare I add that for me he was overrated. But his films have a unique charm that is rare and seem to become more charming with the passage of time. I find myself liking those films of his that are underrated (ironically)

But I do think that Anthony Perkins performance in Psycho is one of the best in the history of film.

Yep thats the one I've got. It's shame that they havn't relesed a box set collection with all 52 films that he has directed. Just watched Foregin Correspondant. It was ok. fx very cheesy.

Considering it came out in 1940, I think it's rather good. One of his better ones IMO.

This is out of curiosity... but shouldn't this thread be merged with the one that Qwerty started? Correct me if I'm wrong they seem awfully similar.

Mine was not posted in since 2003, then Gri added a comment into it I believe - so both were brought to the top. I'll merge the two if they both keep going in Gen. Discussion.
