The names of British ships begin with HMS (HMS Devonshire) and the names of American ships begin with USS (USS Wayne). What does HMS and USS stand for?

HMS = Her Majesty's Ship?

USS = United States Ship?

U.S.S. stands for United States Ship. H.M.S. is Her/His Majesty's Ship. S.S. can stand for Sailing Ship, I think.

Like all military jargon, they're easy to guess, just incase the people who failed school and joined the infantry have to remember them.

Please don't shoot me, I do love the infantry really. :)

USS also stands for "United Starship" in Star Trek (it was originally United Spaceship). :)

HMAS = Her/His Majesty's Australian Ship
RAN = Royal Australian Navy

Yes.

SS U.S. submarine
SSN U.S. nuclear powered sub

This is followed by their hull number.
When referred to by name it is still U.S.S.
