part of me actually hopes that Casino Royale is spectacularly rubbish and that it bombs at the box office.

A whole generation grew up with Pierce and their first film was GoldenEye. This will be the first time they see someone else in the role, and they may not be thrilled about it and might skip the picture; someone else will be too much of a shock to them. Maybe it will bomb. Being a Bond fan however, I always hope they are successful.

Agreed. If you're a Bond fan, I see no point in hoping the next film bombs.
