Could there be any possibility SMERSH might have a part in Casino Royle...the film or will SMERSH be replaced with something like spectre?

Come to think of it I really don't know the true answer as to why SMERSH hasn't been refrenced into the films before. Possibly because SMERSH was still in operation in the sixties and Eon productions didn't really want some kind of scandal involving the Russian government?

I could be overthinking? But f someone here knows or might have a better clue feel free to join in.

But think about it: Since the inception of the new Russian intellegence, known as the FSB, perhaps a small sub section (HA! betcha thought I was gonna say Splinter) are watching and taking names...with a certain British 00 agent right at the top of the list? Besides, Russia might want to settle an old score.

Well anyways..it could be possible.

(However if there's a certain american NSA agent..they'll never find me...er, him. :) )

The Cold War has been over for fourteen years. Casino Royale is going to be faithful to Fleming and relevant in 2006 so SMERSH will not be in it.

Wow, you sure say that with conviction. Who says it's going to be faithful and relevant? We might end up with another Moonraker.

Would it be impossible for SMERSH to reassemble? Though the USSR fell years ago, who's to say Russia doesn't have something else up its sleeve?

I 'Googled' SMERSH, and it says that in Gardner's novels, it was merely transformed and renamed, Department V. So, in essence, it could make an appearance. They'll have to have some sort of organisation in the movie, considering Le Chiffre has to be working for someone.

Edit: Well he'll work for someone, if the studio decides to make a true to Casino Royale, film.

Indeed. And Gardner didn't make it up, either. The KGB's Department V wasn't a reformed Smersh, but it was a reformed unit that did what Smersh did - wet jobs, sabotage and black ops. Spetsnaz also replaced Smersh to a degree - and are still around.

Not sure the scar would be relevant in the movie, as it has never been explored in the film series. I really don't know how keen Eon is on targeting political factions in real countries, after some of the bad publicity Die Another Day got in the Koreas.

That said, it'd still be pretty neat to see James Bond battling SMERSH agents on screen.

SMERSH was referenced in FRWL, and Smert Spionem was referenced in TLD.

They've been referenced, but never featured heavily in the films.

And according to Wikipedia, SMERSH only lasted from 1943, to 1946. A mere three year span. By the time the films were being made, it had been discontinued.

This is an interesting article, though it's two years old BBC.

Either wat it could be possible to have them in Casino Royale, although I think it's highly unlikely.

just have any sort of organization that could be used in future films. maybe have le chiffre working for them so it will be the first time we hear about them. kind of similar to dr. no in the way he told bond that he worked for spectre, just an introduction to the organization but you dont really see anyone from it...yet (except le chiffre)
