I agree, Dr. No has so much charm and is such a groundbreaker in so many ways. Still Diamonds is so much fun from start to finish, although the Blofeld angle is played very weak. It seems sometimes like a Dean Martin Matt Helm movie! But I love them both.

First I want to say that I enjoy both films. DAF suffers from a lackluster ending with poor special effects and having Bonds girlfriend turn into a bimbo when she started out as a self assured woman. I wish Connery had lost 20 lbs before he made this one. Most of the humor does not bother me. Dr. No is from that time when I looked up at the movie screen and just thought life is good before I even knew what life was about yet.
Dr. No is the winner
There really is no contest. Even with its humble stature as a $1 million dollar budgeted movie, Dr. No blows DAF out of the water. DAF is just too goofy. It is recognized as the beginning point from which the Bond series began its downward spiral, leading to the horror of the Roger Moore years. Dr. No features a better Bond, a hotter Bond girl, a better Felix Leiter, a better villain and none of the silliness of DAF. That being said, I still enjoy DAF, but it is not an important entry in the series.
