I believe out of all the potentials he shines through as the most obvious choice as a creditable known actor with an excellent body of work.
Looks like Bond should too and hes Scottish.

I have championed Dougray Scott for quite some time and would like to hear from other members who would welcome a darker Bond with an edge.

I'd welcome a darker Bond with an edge, but not Scott. While I don't believe I've seen him in anything other than MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II, I think he's a terrible actor and sounds like Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers films (I'm not having a pop at Scottish accents here; after all, the greatest Bond ever had one - just having a pop at Scott's particular way of speaking).
Also, I don't think he looks like Bond, in any way, shape or form. Bluntly, he's too ugly for the role. Sure, Bond should look menacing at times, but not as downright scary as Scott.

He could be alright, though I'm not that familiar with his work.

In my opinion he's a little too dark. At least for the cinematic Bond. However, if Eon ever did my dream -- faithful period adaptations of the Fleming books on the BBC -- Scott could be a good choice.
Welcome to CBn, sevenil.

Dougray Scott as Bond, huh?
A Bond movie with English subtitles. Very courageous.

About Dougray Scott playing James Bond, I can't say I agree. He just doesn't seem like the kind of actor to do the role. Maybe I just liked his role as Sean Ambrose too much, but when I really thought about him playing Bond, I still couldn't envision it. Personally, he seems a little too... agressive for the role. Not that James Bond isn't agressive, it's just that Bond can be suave at the same time, and honestly, I don't know if Dougray Scott is very suave! But, if he does somehow nab the role, he could prove me wrong.

Many people are talking about Clive Owen, but Scott is a far better choice for many reasons:
1) THE LOOK. Dougray has presence and poise. He is ruggedly handsome in a classic way. Owen is uncouth in comparison and looks like something a local farmer grew in his soil.
2) THE VOICE. Dougray has the right timbre for Bond and anyone who's seen "Ever After" surely knows he can modify and mask his Scottish accent by as much as he ever needs to, so that's obviously not an issue. He has a commanding voice and yet can deliver lines in a soft, intimate way when required. Owen's voice lacks expression, his accent is all wrong, there is no depth to his delivery and tonally, he sounds like a cross between Sat afternoon at Millwall FC and a cheap cowbell.
3) PHYSICAL PRESENCE. Scott looks like he could 'down' someone with great ease. He fills a screen when he appears on it and demands that the eyes follow his movements. He looks like he can run, fight, climb...whatever Bond needs to do. Owen has none of these qualitites.
4) THE EYES. Dougray acts with his eyes. One can see his characters' conundrums and conflicts, even when the lines are few. The character comes to the forefront in this vital, yet often overlooked component of acting. Clive has the eyes of a carp.
5) AGE. More movies, more character development, more franchise familiarity. Plus Dougray looks younger relative to his age than Clive does.
6) AUTHENTICITY. I could believe Scott is a tough, smart master spy. To be convinced of the same of Owen is simply too much of a stretch. He has failed to convince me he IS his character on many occasions and always has a transparency IMO, in other words he always LOOKS like he's acting, rather than BEING.
7) CLASS. Scott has it. He is a rare mix of elan and danger - just what the role demands. Owen in a tux looks like, well, a croupier, not an elegant agent. Nothing about him smacks of a man who'd drink particular Martinis and eat caviar. I could more easily see him down at the Chippy after the pub. That's not the Bond I want to see.
For me the bottom line is, who is fit to fill the shoes made by Connery? And Dougray is a 100% better candidate.
