Are the original ones good? And do they require knowledge of Sherlock Holmes to understand?

Man, the title of this thread really confused. I wondered how he might go about writing a new novel while after he's passed away.

Yes, and mostly yes. To make it a more enjoyable experience, it's fun to juxtapose Moriarty's take on things against Watson's. They do stand on their own, however, as Holmes is more of a bit player.

I've got the first two. Greatly enjoyed them for their depiction of the London underworld. These are great reads, so I'm looking forward to getting this new book.
