I'm new here, and have only recently become interested in 007, but I have a question. I know many, if not all, of the early fims, (Dr. No, OHMSS) were based on Fleming novels. Recent films, such as Brosnan's films (which I love) have all been original stories. When did the change occurr, and why? Thanks.

1995 GoldenEye - All new.

Is it? I always considered it as based on Flemings Moonraker.

1962 Dr. No - pretty close to Fleming at beginning, but deviates towards the end
1963 F.R.W.L. - pretty faithful to Fleming
1964 GOLDFINGER - retains characters but streamlines and updates plot
1965 THUNDERBALL - pretty faithful
1967 Y.O.L.T. - uses characters and Japan, but whole new plot
1969 O.H.M.S.S. - Very close to novel
1971 DIAMONDS... - keeps a few character names, idea of diamond smuggling, Vegas, but new story and brings back Blofeld.
1973 LIVE AND LET DIE - keeps a couple of characters and Caribbean setting and voodoo. The rest is new.
1974 GOLDEN GUN - retains Scaramanga character and Mary Goodnight. The rest is new.
1977 T.S.W.L.M - retains steel teeth, the rest is new.
1979 MOONRAKER - keeps character name Hugo Drax and Moonraker name. The rest is a remake of TSWLM
1981 F.Y.E.O. Combines two Fleming short stories and adds keelhaul sequence from LALD. Shifts location to Greece.
1983 OCTOPUSSY - Whole new plot and characters, but briefly mentions events in Fleming's story.
1983 NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN - rival remake of Thunderball. First non-Fleming movie title
1985 A VIEW TO A KILL - dropped the word "From..." from Fleming's title [Why???], otherwise all new.
1987 THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS Incorporates Fleming short story in new plot. Return to Fleming's character of Bond himself
1989 LICENSE TO KILL New title (Originally "License Revoked" was planned) New plot, but with several elements and names from "The Hildebrand Rarity" and "Live and Let Die"
1995 GoldenEye - All new.
1997 T.N.D. All new.
1999 T.W.I.N.E. All new.

EON now have the rights to Fleming's first novel "CASINO ROYALE", so maybe a return to Fleming is still "on the cards".
