On seeing Tomorrow Never Dies for the second time I asked myself several times how James Bond and Wai Lin managed to loosen the ropes supporting the building banner of Elliot Carver in order to use it in the fashion of an abseil.

The answer comes to us from the insert in the Tomorrow Never Dies Soundtrack (the original release, not the full score). One of the promotional pictures provided shows Wai Lin with meat-cleaver-like knife hacking at one of the large ropes.

So where does this knife come from?

The reason for the kifes appearance orrucrs around 76:38 minutes into the movie. This is the scene where Bond and Lin jump through the window, away from Carver

Thanks Zencat :) Took a while and two drafts of the report to make it run smoothly. But in the end it works.

Did you ever notice before Bond reaching to get the toolbox and then hey presto : the rope's cut? I noticed it the second time I saw TND I think. Always got to me, recently I discovered the reasons :)

Well done, Mr CBN Editor.:)

I feel there is no real mistakes here other than it just being a case of fast-paced editing going a tad too far.

A couple of these cuts appear to have been shaved a little too fine, but hardly worth considered as a time saving exercise to shorten the movie's length.

Someone was trying to out-edit Peter Hunt I think.:)

You're right Blofeld's Cat, there are no real mistakes here, just fast paced editing. But I think they needed to remove the whole reference to the knife, don't show us Brosnan going for the box. That's useless information. It's fine that us fans can sit back and solve it over time, but the general audience don't have that opportunity or whim.

An interesting thing. My friend Ajay Chowdhury just e-mailed me, he mentioned the deleted scene. He said he's definetley scene it in every print. Can anyone say the same or is Ajay mistaken?

I always knew that they had mucked up editing this scene. In fact there is quite a few scenes that have been edited from the film. Most notably the one mentioned above, but the one with Wai Lin's throw star and Bond's head stomp on the guard in the stealth ship.
Another thing that bugs me is when Carver says to Stamper to make sure he clears all the mines - yet, Wai Lin gives Bond the fuses so that the missile ignition will set off the mines and destroy the ship. Huh? I though all the mines were cleared? So much for German efficiency! Is this poor editing or a genuine mistake?

Is that a mistake Scaramanga? I always thought she threw Bond the fuses, which he places on the rocket part of the missile, so the detonators go off when the missile ignites.

Those scenes are in the video I have, and I've seen the movie a couple of times on cable and they were in. I'd that they were cut by the local censorship board.

May be. I just assumed she had spare fuses/detonators, whatever.

This would be more a blooper that slipped by everybody rather than an a mistake by just the editors.
