Wow, I really enjoyed The House of Silk! Marvelous book, easily one of my favorite Holmes "continuation" novels. Makes me think that Horowitz could write a darn good Bond novel. A real joy. Hated to see it end.

Well that was VERY interesting! By luck I caught an episode of SHERLOCK on PBS last night – The Blind Banker I think it was called. How many of these have they made? At first it was a bit disorientating but by the end....

Glad you like it: the other two they screened were even better than Blind Banker; especially better-directed. For me, A Study in Pink (the first one) is possibly the most successful adaptation of Holmes I've seen.
Three more films on the way, possibly just after Christmas.

Thanks MM I'm definitly going to keep my eye out for them. Your high praise for Study in Pink is intriguing...will let you know..

Just got back from seeing SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS.

Great popcorn fun, quite enjoyable. Much better than the last film.

I'm keeping it very short: Two pleasant surprises, two nitpicks related to the canon. Very spoilery, the nitpicks.

Upon second viewing, I still enjoyed the heck out of it, so I think I can safely say it'll eventually make its way into the 00Twelve home library.

Terrific fun; a really entertaining film in every way. Better than the first, I'd say: for such a pleasingly OTT movie it sounds odd to say, but I think it was less fantastical than the first and all the better for it. The first ended with a big silly fight on a CGI Tower Bridge; this was a smaller but more dramatic scuffle on a balcony. In fact I'd say the drama factor was slightly upped this time: things felt a bit more important this time round- there was more tension. And the laughs are big and good: the final scene has a belter.
Actually that last fight: has that been done in many Holmes movies before? I can't think of any previous one I've seen. Funny for such an iconic scene.

Some really excellent set pieces: the early train scene in particular stands out for me. Very funny, very exciting, well constructed, full of great character moments. A lot of the laughs come purely from knowing and caring about the characters which I think shows the film is working rather well.

Best Sherlock Holmes movie ever? Well, every one has something different to offer, but I think this is the most successful in terms of pure entertainment value, yeah. Doyle's stories were the well-crafted blockbuster audience-pleasers of the day rather than high art: this carries on the tradition well.

Not many Holmes movies, no. It was probably most famously done in the Granada BBC series starring Jeremy Brett (you can watch it on Youtube, it's the first search result). It will presumably be done again with Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Scott in the finale of the next SHERLOCK series, "The Reichenbach Fall" (see what they did there?).

The best Holmes film is easily Billy Wilder's THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.

+1

I have the laser disc that has some of the missing scene reconstructions. I love this film, and the fact that so much footage from what Wilder actually wanted to do with the Road Show approach is lost forever makes me angry enough to kick a puppy. What an excellent Criterion Blu Ray that will never happen.

I'm so counting the days to this one. Does it keep up with the first one in terms of story continuation and characters Matt?

I think the first one is better in terms of story, but the absolute awesomeness of Stephen Fry makes the entire movie just brilliant. There's a lot more of Watson in this one as well, which is great. Overall though, I think this ones better and a lot more entertaining than the first one. Saying that though, the first one was AMAZING.

Have to admit I'm more of a SHERLOCK guy than a fan of GR's Rock'nSherlock approach. First one was entertaining but a bit like Chinese food for me, within a day I had forgotten most of it. This one looks like a lot more of it. No doubt entertaining, but firmly in that popcorn vein of the first effort.

How many here feel that Jeremy Brett gave the most accurate portrayal of the character as written by Doyle? If not, then whom would you say did?

(Watching some of his program at the moment, got me curious.)

Jeremy Brett in my book IS Sherlock Holmes! That's how I imagine him when I run through the pages. No other comes even close.

Just finished House of Silk and was severely impressed. A little too much filler early on, but Horowitz explains in the afterword of the e-book that the publisher had a desired word count. Not a huge Alex Rider fan, although I read some of them to my son when he was younger, and I didn't like the Poirot TV adaptations, but his voice was spot on for this and he obviously put a ton of effort into making it a factual and tonal period piece. He demonstrates in spades what has been lacking in the post-Amis Bond; that being a faithful devotion to the character and the literary flourish and skill to make it come alive on the page.

Interesting little bit in the e-book afterword where he writes about having dealt with literary estates before. He mentions having dealt with the Fleming estate, along with Tintin and another that escapes my memory at five in the morning.

I'd be all for him taking a swipe at it again, and I'll make sure to pick up a nice hardcover for a place of distinction in my Holmes bookcase.

As in the case of James Bond, it may well be that the first actor you see as Holmes is the one who lingers in your mind. For me, that was Peter Cushing, and he's the guy I see when reading a Holmes story.

Yeah, I don't think it's much a secret that he was wanted to do Young Bond.

Knew that I should check the Sherlockians thread more often... thought that the 2nd season of Sherlock was set to air some time in late summer. Almost missed the fact that it actually starts this week. Thanks for the info, MT. Just hope that this time, we don't need to wait a full year for the German version to air (not that I really need it, but it helps).

José Luis Garci has finished the filming of his new Holmes movie.

Gary Piquer will be a Holmes that pursued Jack the Ripper until Madrid. A possible title is "Holmes & Watson: Madrid Days" (in English although the movie is in Spanish). It will be ready maybe in September...
