Ioan Gruffudd is a joke as 007

If Tom Cruise went to Eon and said he wants to play Bond, can do a perfect English accent, and is prepared to do the role for a smaller fee, what would Eon say?
"Sorry, Tom, too short."
I'm not sure they would say that.
I think Gibson was approached because he was seen as a 'hotter property' than Brosnan and MGM thought he would guarantee a good return. I guess they saw the potential dollars to be had with a Gibson Bond film and didn't care how tall he was. Had Gibson been an unknown actor back in 94 perhaps Broccoli would never have approached him. Hard to know.
Unless a shorter, unknown actor comes along and is so AMAZING in a screentest, so Bond-like in appearance, I can't see someone of Gibson's height being Bond. But I think somone like Ioan Griffudd, being 5'11, would most definitely be a serious candidate. I think Grifffudd could be the guy Eon pick.

And on a more serious note
I do wish Mr Gruffudd would change his surname. I can never spell it right!
I understand that Arnold Schwartzenegger was pressured by his agent to change his name to something more memorable and pronounceable. Having Ioan Gruffudd change his name to more pronounceable, and spellable, John Griffiths would make him rather ordinary wouldn't it?

"Sorry Tom, too expensive."

And they would probably identify him as being too commercial, fearing "Tom Cruise movies" instead of "Bond movies" (similar to the apparent reason behind Cubby's rejection of Mel Gibson).
But you're right, I'm sure any actor that comes in and does an amazing screentest would make the producers think twice, as in, "Wow, could we bend the rules as to Bond's height? We have before". Ioan Gruffudd may have a chance yet.

But I don't think Gruffudd's height is preventing him from getting the role. I think fans are getting hung up on a problem that doesn't exist. So Gruffy is one inch too short - is that the end of the world? I do think we have to get this all in perspective. Is it so terrible if Gruffudd is a few inches shorter than Connery? I doubt it. If Gruffuff was 5'7 or 5'8 then yes, I would say he'd have to try that much harder to convince Eon he was the right man for the role, but 5'11 is not short. I don't see how he has anything to worry about height-wise. More important is can he actually act the part? Being the right height means nothing if the actor can't act the part.

Perhaps, but his name is a bit of a mouthful. And besides, nothing wrong with John Griffiths! Very movie-star name.*

Okay, it's not really.

I think he was actually creditted as "Arnold Strong" in some movie.
Just as well they didn't translate his name into English: "Arnold BlackNegro"
Probably wouldn't be as famous.

Never seen Gruffudd in a movie. Done several Yahoo! and Google image searches on him, doesn't seem quite masculine enough to be Bond, also (to me) doesn't seem like he could be a lady killer.

Yeah, he'd be great! If Eon want a young Bond, there can be no one else. Otherwise, go with Clive Owen and give him some time to get older, THEN pick him. Either way, I fully expect him to be Bond one day.
