I recently received the complete DVD set of all episodes of this great show. In the very first episode there's a scene where our two disheveled heroes are apprehended by the villains. As the English Lord of the piece Roger Moore as Lord Brett Sinclair cannot allow himself to be caught in sartorially incorrect mode and so adjusts his tie before raising his hands to the sky in the accepted gesture of surrender. Now we know where Pierce got the idea from!

Bond adjusts his tie after Sandor falls to his death in TSWLM. "Helpful chap".

This is most likely where the idea came from.

I think Connery adjusts his after taking that dive off the upper level in YOLT, just before he is knocked out by Osato's henchmen.

When the belly-dancer shouts out that she's lost her charm in The Man With The Golden Gun Bond adjusts his tie while saying: "Not from where I stand."

I thought he did it in Goldfinger as well, but I would have to check to be certain.

I'll have to re-check, but I'm sure he also adjusts his tie in the Thunderball PCS when telling Madame Boitier/Jacques Boitier/Bouvar/Bob Simmons/whoever that he really shouldn't have opened the car door by himself.

I'm pretty sure I remember that too Cat. He seems to then be caught off guard when she reveals her true intentions.

God help me!!! I love "The Persuaders"!!! I saw it about five years ago and was surprised to even find out that Roger and Tony Curtis had even done a show together! Now that BBC America just started playing it, I can really sit back and enjoy. I guess it was the interregnum between "The Saint" and Moore's turn as Bond. I love the rapport between Wilde and Sinclair and the fact that their swingin' singles in the early '70s French Riviera. Roger's long hair, Tony's middle-aged decline (mutton chop sideburns and a receding hairline) Wonderful stuff! I've been a Tony Curtis fan since I saw "Sweet Smell of Success" (probably my favorite movie of all time) and I also discovered that Curtis was at the height of his drug abuse during this time. Glad he survived, however.

Great show! To write fan fiction would be fun, too.

It is a good show, Brian. I don't think a night goes by in which I don't have an episode of that, The Avengers, or The Saint in my DVD player.

How is the sound and picture on those DVDs? The BBC America picture is always washed out and not very crisp, are the DVDs any better?

I'm seriously thinking of getting the DVDs for this show, but have read on Amazon.com that there are some sound problems on a few episodes, like it wasn't synchronized properly. Can anyone provide some more information on this? Besides, those sets are friggin' expensive!!! And for a show with just 24 episodes.

This is fast becoming my favorite show. I was born in '71, so it's interesting to see how people dressed back then. And I thought the early 1970s were boring... The era does have it's charm...

I wouldn't want you rushing around during the holiday madness just to buy those DVDs for me, Qwerty!:)

By the way, it would appear that the premiere "Persuaders!" site, Blofeld'scat.com's domain has lapsed. What a shame, as it's the only place on the net that does the show any justice in terms of fan sites. Hopefully, it will be back up soon.

I got mine last Christmas from Deep Discount DVD when they had a 20 percent off everything sale. Do some searching and you can find them for a decent price, especially if it's becoming your favorite show.

Can't speak about any of the synchronization problems, though.

So then there are no sound problems to report? You do have Region 1 DVDs, correct?

I have to say that I almost prefer Roger Moore in 'The Persuaders' than James Bond. :)

OK, he was excellent as James Bond, but in some way he was above playing this character. :)

Roger Moore is what I'd call a 'celebrity actor', and playing James Bond was just a routine part for him. And I don't think that any actor could, or would of been able to take over from the definitive James Bond, Sean Connery.

Roger Moore is a self contained institution in his own right.

Cheers,

Luisa Moore. :)

After you've seen Rog in 'The Persuaders' you'll know what I mean.

Roger played himself in 'The Saint' and in 'The Persuaders' and he was bloody good.

Playing James Bond he kinda had a problem with the part. He was too nice to play a killer who killed in a cold way. OK, he was a very good James Bond, but it didn't suit his character.

You could say that he was the best actor to play the part because it was out of his usual 'persona'. And in my opinion, I prefer him because of his stellar and self defecating approach to a very hard role.

To me, Sean is the boss, but Roger hold the key to the shop.

Cheers,

Ian

I really love Roger as Brett Sinclair, I can't remember how many times I watched the serie. What an awesome show tailor-made for him and his innate and terrific sense of humour. He even designed himself his clothes.

I just hope there won't be a remake of the serie as the chemestry between Roger and T. Curtis was unique and perfect... I've heard in a recent past about Nicolas Cage playing Danny Wilde and Hugh Grant as Lord Sinclo. No, no!

I must admit I do prefer Roger as Simon Templar and Lord Sinclair rather than as Bond even if he is and will stay from far the best one :)

This topic lives! :)

Qwerty, if you haven't seen "The Persuaders!" Do so now! It's a great show, very early seventies in style, music, etc., But most of all, it's fun.

As for a movie remake: Please, no! There are movies and TV shows best to remain in their era of origin (The Avengers, The Saint, The Mod Squad) because those shows are so representative of that time. And it's pretty much a given that the Hollywood hacks are going to "re-imagine" and "update" a "Persuaders!" movie. Besides, the world isn't as mod, funky or cool anymore. :)

And not to beat this topic to death, but Roger Moore is still the second-best Bond ever. No small feat considering he was "all wrong" for the role.

Bondian, when you say "self defecating" approach, would this be because you feel all his roles have a manure like consistency to them; perhaps you feel he just squeezes them out between cigarette puffs; or more likely you feel his portrayal just dumps on those of all other pretenders to the role?

I'm not sure I follow but if perhaps you would be good enough to unload the true essence of your thoughts, that would better qualify your input and indeed enlighten the board members.

For which, many thanks.

He didn't actually - there was an interview with him that included this topic. they were designed elsewhere and just had his name attached as a sales gimmick.

To quote him, "It happened as a gimmick but in the end, no one gave a ****."

I think The Persuaders!, along with The Avengers and The Saint, is probably my number one show ever.

There are a few places in one or two episodes in which the lip synch is off. It's annoying, sure, but it doesn't last very long when it does happen.

You could get the Region 2 DVDs for a much cheaper price, but the picture isn't nearly as clean and bright as it is on the Region 1.
